Never ceased to amaze me.

My personal philosophy is to let myself get Robbed. Cameras, alarms and additions security devices seem like overkill and not really a deterrent any more that the stickers from the alarm company.
I choose to have a philosophy where I accept things will get stolen from me over the course of my life and the effort and stress involved to worry about it isn't worth it. Pictures are backed up off site the rest is insured. So I try not to worry about it.

How people think stabbings go:
How stabbings actually go:

For those thinking "baseball bats", consider that it might be hard to get a decent swing, depending where you are in the house. A tire checker/knocker/bat is a more compact alternative, and can be found in many auto stores:
Also, this is a great and cheap deterrent , whether you have an alarm system already or not.

But are the junkies holding onto it, or are they selling it for drugs? Still think chances are better at the rich house.

I have a similar philosophy, but the weapon isn't for protecting my possessions. It's for protecting my family.
I'd probably confront the thief and if he really seemed fearless, I'd tell him to take cash from wallets, an item or two, but leave ID/credit cards etc. (those are a pain in the ass to reissue) and my family free of physical harm and I'd lie and say I'll give him a 5 minute head start from the cops.
But if I sense fear/I have the upper hand, I'd consider going in swinging.
I like Jon Duke's idea. I'm also considering sawing off the bottom 2 feet of my next broken hockey stick to use as a billy club. Good grip, doesn't cost anything, light and seems like an effective weapon without being super overboard.

Hearing a question to Marleau about Hertl and whether he was showboating, Thornton said: “Shut up, have you ever played the game?”
When the press turned his way, he then added:
“I’d have my [rooster] out if I scored four goals. I’d have my [rooster] out, stroking it.”
Joe Thornton's house is off limits.

He called his wife to meet him, and while she distracted the clerk he took down the name and address on the purchase form. He then drove out the address (a trailer park) and waited with his baseball bat. Then he realized he was being dumb and went home and called the cops with the information. They went to the Cash Converters and, no surprise, the security cameras were out of order. But they had enough information to identify the burglars, and arrests were made.

B&E's are a dying crime these days, there's little left in a house that's worth stealing anymore.

Despite the article in the first post of this thread stating that there was a 56% increase over last year in Calgary?

Historically Calgary, like Vancouver, has seen a 3 to 5% decrease in property crime each year since 2000.
The larger percentage swings probably represent the much smaller amount of crimes in first place.
Smaller sample sizes make for wider percentage changes

You've never had anything stolen have you? It's not that easy.
That said, in principle I agree, you can't live your life in fear. If you're altering the way you live your life the terrorists have won.
