I don't think it's even a question -- the guy can (obviously) still play at a very high level and still seems to be having a blast. He'll definitely get contract offers -- why not chase history?
The only way I'd see him retiring is if the Panthers win the Cup and he could go out on top.

Jagr has specifically said he will play for as long as he possibly can, even going as far saying he will try to play till he is 60. I foresee 3 more years from the old skilled bugger.

Jagr has now drawn even with Messier at 1887 points (Jagr has played 96 fewer games and has 61 more goals).
3rd in P/GP among players with 1350+ GP (behind Yzerman and Gretz).
Not many more milestones to come. Needs 46 goals to catch Howe. 3, 37 and 61 assists to catch Coffey, Bourque and Messier. He could still climb a few spots on the PPG list. Only 970 points behind Gretzky.
He is the all time leader in GWG with 133, to Esposito's 118 in 2nd. Iginla is 6th with 97, Gretzky is only 17th with 91.

Had he not gone to the KHL for three years he probably would have easily broke 2000 points. Good on him for eventually passing Messier

One more cup and one more Olympics would be awesome. He is a freak. In the same group as Messier, Howe, Chelios as far as being able to play well into his forties. Superstar with longevity.

Imagine if the NHL schedule was 162 games like in baseball... imagine.

For me, now that he is into 2nd, it actually makes the 'what if' game completely irrelevant. Because even if he had stayed those years and upped his stats he would still be miles away from Gretzky.
Instead we can shift the conversation to the always pointless comparison of players in different era's and who was better.
Just a quick thought with no numbers to back this up... Considering how many points Jagr has put up in an era of much lower scoring, does that bring his accomplishments closer to Gretzky? It's pretty hard to even start a conversation that goes against Gretzky being the best scorer ever as he revolutionized the game in so many ways.
I wonder if anyone has done a comparison of great players output compared to league average to see how they would rank. And things might not be as terribly biased as scoring peaks for players quite young and when Jagr was young, scoring was still decent. So the dead puck era wouldn't have hit him as hard as younger players like Ovechkin and Crosby. I'm just rambling at this point!

It's still Gretzky > everyone else, but Jagr is awesome nonetheless.

What an amazing player. In the Iggy thread there is a debate over bringing in an older RW if the Flames are in a playoff position.
As much as I love Iggy, I would kill for the chance to buy a Flames Jagr jersey!

And Bobby Hull has an impressive 913.

I honestly saw only 600 goals and 1400 points from him, great to see him surpass that.

What was that stat they flashed on Snet last night showing the age of the players when they hit a certain total (was it 1800 points???)
Whatever it was Gretzky was 28 when he hit it, the rest of the guys on the list were drinking prune juice. Just unbelievable.
Not to take away anything from Jagr, he's 110% one of the greats. But it blew me away just how far ahead Gretzky was and probably always will be.

Gretzky is clearly the best and it will be hard to ever get anyone close for numbers like that again. Maybe we should create a 80's handicap to compare to era's.

Handicap the eras? Messier played the exact years Wayne did. But five years longer.

Who said anything about Mess? Mess did benefit from that era if you're going down that road, as did many many players.
If the current crop of stars played in the same era or today's era was the same as the 70s and 80s, there would probably be a lot more players in the 1500+ point club.

For the basis of comparing two players stat wise during different time periods with different rules/equipment etc.
IE: Comparing Player A who played from 1975-1985 to Player B who played from 1995-2005.
I'm sure someone could come up with a factor based on average league scoring etc.

There already is. It's called era adjusted scoring. Gretzky is still first by a lot.

There's the adjusted points that hockey-reference has. Gretzky sits at 2475 in first place. Jagr is third with 2075.
