Well the league overall is WAY better than it was back then. Back then there were a ton of bad teams in the league. Now? There's like 2 bad teams EDM and TOR. And EDM is slowly improving while TOR is tearing down.
This team is not that bad if we have even average goaltending. We've had horrible goaltending for a large chunk of this year.

hnic and sportsnet national panel have both spoken about the terrible goaltending
i think hartley is playing the cards he was dealt by treliving, although i wonder if this was hiller's last start

Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic. Yeah, maybe a lot will write this game and this losing streak off. Maybe people will console themselves with the possibility at drafting in a better spot come June. I won't. This is simply not acceptable. Maybe this roster isn't playoff material, but no way is it the 2nd worst roster in the NHL. We've just got overtaken by the god damn Oilers FFS! That is not acceptable, where has people's pride gone? The last 2 years come win or loss, you knew that the Flames had worked their socks off and would have, most nights, given the opposition a tough game. But we are just a joke at the moment. A total joke. We aren't working hard, not as individuals or as a unit. Yeah, some of the players can mostly absolve themselves of blame because they have done what was asked of them, but the majority have been pathetic and its not acceptable.
I mean, losing 6-3 to the Sabres?! The same team that could only score a goal on the Oilers? Say what you like about the Oilers, but at least since their coach and GM came out with some strong comments a few weeks ago, they at least look more engaged and have shown some improvement. Maybe its time for Treliving to remind some of our players that they are playing for their futures.
At the very least, he needs to remove the temptation from Hartley to start Hiller ever again by sticking that useless clown on waivers. Then go with Ortio and Backstrom. Hartley also needs to start earning his paycheck, because his management recently and in parts over the course of the season has been a joke, making mistake after mistake, most of them awful ones. Seriously, the way Hartley has done this season makes me think Treliving should seriously look at his position in the summer. He's been awful in the last month or so and the defensive structure of this team has not improved one bit in the last 2 years. In fact, its worse than it was 2 years ago, which is also not on.
Like I said, I can take not being very good, especially after selling off 3 roster players at the deadline. But there is no excuse for being this bad over the last 10 or so games. No excuse whatsoever. Heads need to start rolling, because this can't carry on for 18 more games. If it was 5-6, I'd let it go. But 18?! Doesn't matter if we draft Matthews or a Finn or any rookie in the summer, if this team and this management can't figure out how to play hockey as individuals and as a team, then no rookie, no matter how good, will turn us around.
People can make Hiller and the goaltending the scapegoat, but our issues go way deeper than that, way way deeper. Time for the management to step up, time for the leaders of this team to step up.

A Finn would be wonderful but you just know we'll finish 2nd last and pick 5th.

4th or 5th overall would still be pretty great. The top end isn't just 3 players.

The way some people are talking about the Flames Jack Adam's Award winning coaching is really disappointing.
Do you know who they give the Jack Adam's Award to? THE BEST COACH. Therefore, Bob Hartley is the best coach. It's called logic. You know who changes coaches? Edmonton! Do you know who is bad—Edmonton!
Hartley gives the Flames the best chance to win right now.

One of the few times I have ever been embarrassed to be a Flames fan. We have never tanked before and this doesn't feel right. How do Oiler and Buffalo fans do this every year?

Absolutely fair. It's just a comment about my optimism about current way things have gone. True that it's a rebuild...just a lot of strange events throughout the season.
I'd be happy with most players available 4-10 and there are a couple prospects I really like in that range.

GT for some of that I assume, but I'll play along. Hiller was underrated last year and did more than most would like to admit in getting this team to the playoffs, playing much more consistent than Ramo, and keeping the team in many games with a 2-1 or 3-1 down save so the Flames could come back in the 3rd. He was overall much better than Ramo in the regular season.
See how that works 1 year later?

What a tire fire the Flames have turned into. This is almost as bad as 91-92 for under achievement.

With Hartley, it'll be 2-3 games from now. Treliving needs to force Hartley's hand and waive Hiller.
