For all you "glass is half full" types, does the way we defend not concern you? Does the fact that it hasn't improved in the last couple of seasons not concern you? We conceded 241 goals in the 13-14 season and managed 77 points. We currently sit at 195 with 21 games to go, so well on pace to concede more. I'd also be surprised if we hit 77 points again. We have 3 pieces on the blueline and 5-6 pieces on the forward lines. We shouldn't be this bad. I can accept being bad, but we shouldn't be almost Toronto/Edmonton esq bad.

Even setting last season aside, this season hasn't built on the 13-14 season. We've gotten worse in a lot of ways. Or there hasn't been any improvement. Gio and Brodie as a pair has often been found wanting in their own zone, making bad decisions and giving up loads of scoring chances. Besides our recent 3rd pairing call ups, the rest of the defence has been no better. 2 years down the line and we are still no closer to finding even a stop gap solution in net.

As for the forwards, they have mostly done what has been asked of them, those that have used properly and haven't been played in roles too advanced for them. But their defensive work has been shabby outside a couple of them, as individuals and as a unit. The PK units have been awful all year. Yes they've been let down by poor goaltending, but it doesn't alter the fact that the PK units have been badly lacking all season.

The PP is getting better(in the absence of Wideman, not a coincidence I think), but that was stuck in last for far too long.

Yes, we can write this season off and it will sting a bit less when we approach the draft, but for me, there are massive concerns going into next year that the coaches and GM have to address. I just don't feel like, even though our roster has added more pieces of the roster, our play has improved along with them from 2 years ago. And don't throw last season at me, that was a complete one off.

Something i havent seen mentioned yet, the flames had a lot of push back this game. I dont know if it was the Ferland-Bennett-Hathaway line setting the tone but it seemed the whole team was engaged tonight. Engelland had a couple of good hits and even backlund a moment or two. Something I feel was missing all season.

Hathaway makes a lot more sense as a bottom 6 forward for the Flames than Jooris. The Flames really need to let Jooris go this off-season.

IMO, the two biggest reasons are goaltending and the defensive system.

Both can be fixed.

Our league worst goaltending.

Competent, average goaltending (not even elite goaltending) would see us with quite a few more points than we have.

If I'm correct we only have 12 healthy forwards on this road trip. Is there a call to the farm tomorrow?

This team plays different in front of Hiller. Good jump in the third, but we're destined to get a top 3 if this keeps up. At least the losses are entertaining, I suppose.

This reminds me of when Kipper was backing up Turek.

Hathaway looked solid tonight, good replacement for Jonesy. I also liked Ferland's play.

What happened to Giordano's grit? Him and Brodie are so soft it can be maddening. You know who I sit next game? One of Brodie or Giordano. They are soft and sloppy right now. Ease off their minutes as well. I am enjoying the play of Wotherspoon and Nakladal and hope they play out the season.

And Engelland was great tonight. Would love to see him paired with Brodie again.

Maybe, but we only have 3 non emergency call ups left according to Treiliving as they created the situation by trading away guys so their not considered emergency call ups

Empty netters don't count.

The problem is our goalies plain and simple. With a good goalie this team is probably in the playoffs. They usually put in a good effort, it's insanely hard on the defense when the goalie has vertigo and is apt to let in anything. Goalie is our number one priority, we need a starter and until then we will suck. Many backups are better than any of our starters.

Why on Earth would you sit Brodie and Giordano? I mean, unless you're totally committed to the tank...

Some of the players are really trying to hard to to it all on there own.. Bennet is a real stand out for this when trying to gain the zone.

I'm actually really happy about the rebuild process to date.

Also to the Flames. Loved the game but

#Flames callup Garnet Hathaway, well said: "As hard as it was for them to lose guys they like, I hope I can at least take a role they left."

no kidding people are facking crazy...they don't realize these guys are playing the hard minutes against the tough competition. Other guys look good because their roles are limited

Well, we're not winning with them and the past few games I have felt they have been sub par. Both were awful tonight. Sloppy and soft. Pretty bloody straight forward.

Maybe if the effort was lacking. But its not.

Guys have bad games. Sometimes the other guys have good games (like Giroux did tonight).

You don't bench your captain and leader for that.

The team as a whole was sloppy and soft tonight.

I mean, you look at who we lost to trades/are missing:

- David Jones
- Ladi Smid
- Dennis Wideman
- Kris Russell

These are all grittier guys, who we were without tonight. The Flames are a very soft team now. Gio and Brodie just play more - so, it's more obvious, maybe? I don't know.

I may not be getting at what you mean, but I see apples and oranges.

GF seems better. With half decent goaltending the flames are near a playoff team despite their defensive challenges because they can score. That doesn't remove their defensive issues but that's definitely improvement.

And the other factor I think is the amount of young players. Half the flames forwards are still on their entry level contracts. Geez tonight probably half the team. most of them will learn.
