Don't forget, Sather's last kick at the can this year. After his proclamation way back when about how many Cups he'd win if he had all the resources teams like the Rangers did, his ego won't let the last year in charge fade away and ignore that. The next guy can pick up the tattered pieces.

The rangers will never be in trouble because they can offer what no one else can in the NHL: Major Market Anonymity.

Stars are probably your best bet for that

Saarela is a prospect that has increased his value this season. Granlund sized but good pace and shot. Used to be highly rated when he was very young if I recall correctly, but had dropped considerably by the time his draft year came.

No one else? Basically all of the southern teams have that, major market or not. I'd say probably half the league are cities where players aren't likely to get recognized when out and about.

He relinquished his GM title last year. Is he going to relinquish his president duties? First I heard of this.

None of them have what New York has to offer, not even LA.

True, but anonymity is not unique to New York.

Angry about the Iggy trade.
Based on this he clearly should've returned less!
Feaster got greedy.

This puts the Hudler deal into perspective a bit. They had to retain 50% salary and got a slightly better return. I know some may feel differently but for a playoff run I'd take Staal over Hudler 10/10 times.

slightly better return?
2nd + 2nd + good prospect
2nd + 4th in 2 years
those aren't close

Because Staal is on a different level than Hudler. People on here who were expecting Hudler to bring in a first made me laugh. All Hudler can do is put up points and he sucks this year. Staal can help your team out in a lot or different ways.

Sure, but LA, Anaheim, SJ, Phoenix, Dallas, Nashville, Tampa, Florida and Carolina offer things that NYC can't.
If we're talking UFA's, most have or will soon have young families...I'd rather wear shorts and flip flops to practice and live in a nicer (not to metion cheaper) place to raise a family. The nicest thing I'd see about NYC is the reduced travel.
I've just never understood the argument that NYC is any more desirable than other markets.

This was a significantly better return than Hudler. More than double the return really since the prospect is much better than a 4th round pick and then throw in another 2nd rounder. This was a great trade for Carolina since it's not clear how many teams wanted Staal. Agree he is a very different player than Hudler so the comparison is difficult but it doesn't make me feel any better about the return.

Staal was only willing to go to the Rangers. SO a one-team market.
