Someone says that words matter, which is true. Different words change the meaning of the sentence: also true. I guess you can always respond to that by making an argument that uses no words at all… but I suspect the utility of that approach is rather limited.

There are two defencemen out West who will command attention, but you might be surprised at who brings back the most at Monday’s Trade Deadline.
Among a group of scouts and executives we spoke with this week, Calgary’s Kris Russell was deemed a more valuable UFA Deadline pickup by most than Vancouver’s Dan Hamhuis. It’s a dangerous exercise: My sources could be the minority, and it only takes one GM to overpay and blow a theory out of the water.
But we spoke with more than five different NHL people, and only one said he would said he would acquire Hamhuis ahead of Russell, given a choice between the two with equal trade compensation. Both are considered to be solid No. 4 defencemen on a good team, and there’s no doubt that Hamhuis has had a more decorated career.
“Most of us don’t like small players,” said one scout, “but (Russell) is the biggest small player you’ll find. Top 4 defenceman, good passer, can handle pressure. Great vision and anticipation and sense. Hard to hit…”
Quote:
Russell’s game lends itself to the postseason, was the overriding sentiment.
“You’d think he’d have problems around the front of the net, but he positions himself so he never gets in a high-end strength situation where he has to outmuscle someone,” another scout said. “I love the guy. I wish he was 6-2, 210 lbs. But his heart? It’s that big.”
One executive echoed what so many say about Russell, who led the NHL in shots blocked last season. “Why’s he blocking so many shots? Doesn’t he ever get the puck out?”

What if Russell wants $3.5M and the Flames are only offering to re-up him at $2.6M?
All we have is speculation from Bob M re: the $5.5M and some bs from Eric Francis.
Or would you guys not even want him at $3M? Or is he overpaid at $2.6M currently? I like him up to $3M.
I'd be onboard with giving him up to $3.5m on a 3 year term, but no more than that on either term or AAV.
If he is seriously asking for anything close to, the same as, or more than Brodie's $4.6m AAV, I can't imagine the re-signing conversation gets very far.

It's a good point re: Brodie, but I'm not sure they're comparable because Brodie was an RFA. A player who could walk away into the market gets more, as a rule.
I'm not sure how agents and GMs would handle that kind of comparable.
Am I the only who is troubled that Treviling is still negotiating for a contract extension with Russell but reports are that he never even had talks with Hudler?
If the reports are true about Russell commanding the greater return, then it really should be the other way around. Trade Russell who we can't afford given what we have for contracts on defence anyway and look to extend Hudler at a discount if we aren't anticipating a high return. I see Hudler as the player who will be more difficult to replace.

There was no counter argument to be made. I worded it poorly. If you (for some reason) want to discuss it, you can pm me. I'm not going to derail a thread to argue about wording.

Yeah I'm with everyone who's baffled. I wouldn't sign him for more than $2M AAV or longer than 3 seasons.

Wait, an NHL executive who's actually paying attention? Hire him immediately.

Francis: Flames & Kris Russell are $1.5 million apart on AAV
Kinda funny that if you got a bunch of scouts/GMs together they'd probably have the same debates we do. It's not a black and white business. Anyone who thinks that they're unequivocally right and others are unequivocally wrong on this type of thing, is full of it.
The only undisputed "right" in this business is the silver trophy.
He isn't going to take a hometown discount unless you're putting 6 years up
Or Glencross is telling him not to believe the hype about the massive contract he will get on the open market...bird in the hand type stuff. Have they told you what they talk about?

I'm guessing the ask/offer is close to 4.75mil vs. 3.25 mil, 5yr vs. 4 yrs.
If I were BT my best and final offer is 3.75mil x 4yrs. Which means...trade.
