I still have faith... I saw him play a couple games on a road trip last season... the game in NJ stands out in my memory (the one where Gio got hurt)... it's not that he made a bunch of amazing plays or anything, but he was always noticeable, every shift, due to how fast he was... I think he can be a legit threat in the NHL... we'll see how the next couple of seasons go. I'm shocked he's not putting up more points in the AHL, I haven't watched any of the games this season.

This is hilarious. Kid comes into ahl last year and does extremely well but had some defensive holes.
He doesn't just become a bust in one year. Probably asking him to focus on other areas. You know....learning things.

I'm far more worried about Klimchuk being a bust than Poirier.

See, here's the problem with the whole concept of "over cooking" your prospects. The second one of these guys gets caught in the development stew the fans jump all over him and consider him a bust. If you're looking for anything that is busted look at the decisions to go out and bring in useless free agents to allow for greater development time rather than rotating your prospects through to give them a taste of let them understand the NHL challenge. Our prospects are going to be perceived as "busting" a lot because of this "over cooking" mentality. Hopefully they don't just plateau and can take the next step.

Mason Raymond 8 pts in 7 games in the AHL. So yeah - makes some of our prospects stats feel a bit more concerning.

There is no overcooking with Poirier. He's in his second pro season only and the times he has spent in the NHL, he has not looked ready.
He's barely dominated the AHL. All he has done thus far is "simmered", he's not even cooked yet, let alone overcooked.

Raymond is a guy totally used to the NHL speed. He must think game is in slo-mo for first few in the AHL.
Anyway hard to believe Poirier is high on the list for a call-up after the deadline. We may not see him at all in Calgary this year.

Yet people are already jumping on him about being a bust. What I was saying was that people will have to expect longer development time for prospects in the Flames system with the "over-cooking" mentality. Busting in the Flames system may take a lot longer to achieve simply because the Flames are going to give their players more development time. For impatient fans, that means players will be labeled busts before they have a chance to prove otherwise, which isn't fair because of the Flames approach to player development.

So is anyone actually calling the guy a bust or are many just disappointed with what seems like a regression this year? That really has nothing to do with "overcooking" but just hoping your prospects continue to progress.
I guess the sophomore jinx can apply to the AHL too, but when your hopes are that a guy will show he is too good for that league it's Ok to be a little disappointed without giving up hope.

I do not think anyone in the Flames organization cares if fans think a player is a bust.
It might be a problem for hyper-dramatic armchair GM's, but that's about it.

I don't have any problems with Poirier (21) & Klimchuk (20) developing another season in Stockton.
Grant (25), Shore (25), Hathaway (24) and Agostino (23) will probably graduate to the NHL before them.

I don't have a beef with this argument, yet Phoenix's record while Treliving was assistant GM there doesn't suggest amazing results from over-cooking.
Something that has happened while he was an assistant there, and GM here is a first round pick demanding trade because he believed his career was being sewered. So there's that.

I think Hamilton (24) will be the next call-up along with Agostino at the trade deadline. They have both been very consistent this year and have great chemistry together. I'm not sure how long Grant will be out but it's possible he would at least be called up before Shore and Hathaway at this point.
Even though I don't expect him to be called up this season, I'll give Poirier a pass for a couple more seasons before labeling him a bust.

Two things.
That point ignores that 3 other key prospects seem to have had the opposite experience to that "one" first round pick.
The issues and feeling skeward started for the first rounder before Treliving got here I believe.

Color me unsurprised at Raymond doing well in the AHL. It is a lot slower and defensive systems (which imo are are a big reason guys like Raymond struggle) are way less prevalent. That said, it seems like he's playing well and not pouting like some vets do when sent down.

Yup. Flames have never really had much luck drafting in the 1st round. Way, way more misses then hits that's for sure.

The guy only been playing professional hockey for two season. Problem is, the expectation on him was so high here in CP. Some even predicted he could make the team last season and when he gets called up he'll start playing in the 1st line. Poirer is not having a good season this year so suddenly he is a bust. Let's wait for a couple or more seasons then you can judge him. I still think he will make the NHL someday. The guy got some speed and he can score. He just need to learn a few things especially consistency.

Half of all first round picks don't turn out. We had a bad stretch for sure. Drafting seems to have improved lately.
Backlund, Baertschi, Monahan, Bennett all are NHLers ATM. Jury's still out on Jankowski but he's looking promising. Jury's still out on Poirier and Klimchuk too but they still have promise as well.
