[QUOTE=dissentowner;5631145]Trade #1. Jonas Hiller for Jonathan Bernier
Trade #2. Kris Russell to WSH for 1st 2016
Trade #3. Jiri Hudler to DAL for 1st 2016

I would love an explanation on how any of these three trades would ever happen. Number 3 would be the closest to reality but the other two are out to lunch in my opinion.

Sure, I can break it down for you. Toronto wants to dump Bernier's contract and there is not much of a market for goalies right now. From everything I have heard they are not looking for any kind of special return, they just want to dump the salary. They exchange him for a goalie who has zero term after this season, thus shedding the salary. The other two are deals made by clubs with pressure to win it all this season. Don't kid yourself, the trade deadline will be an arms race this year. Trade #2 might see us also send something like a 4th as well with Russell but the main deal would be what was posted.

I think Toronto can get a heck of a lot more than an expiring Jonas Hiller contract for Bernier especially since we are getting a first for and expiring Russell in your scenarios.

Ok, well we will disagree on that. I live in Leafs territory so I hear a lot about them and everything has pointed to them just wanting to dump Bernier's contract.

Toronto likely can't get anything for Bernier. If he hit the waiver wire he would clear. I would only want him if we were able to send back Wideman, Raymond, Smid, or Engellend.

I live in leafland also. Bernier is the 25th highest paid goalie in the nhl and has one year left on his contract. It isn't exactly an anchor contract. He makes 300k more than Ramo and a million less than Howard. If he had three years left I'd say yeah, his contract is an anchor and they'd be lucky to get anything for him, but one year left isn't much and he would be picked up if he was put in waivers.

You vastly over-value the end of 1st round draft picks.

I think both are right about the correct value for these players.

I honestly think he'd clear too, not because there wouldn't be interest but because I'm guessing any team who would want him would want to send a contract going the other way. I'd take him on the Flames if they'd take raymond back.

Hudler and Russell are going to be two of the top players this deadline.

I wouldn't be surprised if both fetched late 1st rounders, especially Russell. Adding a 25 minute / night Dman who can play any role is huge for a playoff run.

I keep seeing Hudler to Florida. Was there a rumor that I missed? I'm not even sure that the Panthers need someone like Hudler as they have a lot of guys already playing well on the wings.

Hudler: 9 G, 32 P

Huberdeau: 11 G, 40 P
Jagr: 17 G, 40 P
Jokinen: 11 G, 38 P
Reilly Smith: 17 G, 34 P

All 4 top 2 line wingers listed are more physical and better defensively than Hudler too. Hard to find a spot for him on the top 2 lines in Florida.

So let's suppose that he's acquired for scoring insurance and to play on the 3rd line. I doubt the Panthers give up anything of substance for a guy to play on their 3rd line as scoring insurance. That's not even taking into account the fact that both Pirri and Bjugstad have been playing 3rd line minutes, so there's your insurance right there.

I just don't see a fit for Hudler in Florida. Same goes for Dallas, they simply don't need him.

Rather, the one place I could see a landing spot for Hudler is on a team that's struggling to score goals...the Detroit Red Wings. Currently in a playoff spot and playing well with Mrazek in net, but rank 18th in GF/G. The other spot could be St. Louis as they are even lower than the Red Wings in GF/G. Heck, maybe even the Devils would want him for a playoff push to complete their acquisition of all former Flames.

I just don't see the fit with the teams that can already score goals.

Good luck getting a first for Hudler and Russell if this is the going rate. Don't think I'm overvaluing late firsts at all. Don't get me wrong though, I hope we do get a first for both.
From Insider Trading:
Sabres are selling
Jamie McGinn is always on pace to around 20 goals, Sabres are looking for a 2nd round pick for McGinn, however no one is sure someone will give that up as rental market isn't set

Hudler is a much better player than Jamie McGinn. Many scouts have said that the bottom of the 1st rnd in this draft and the 2nd rnd are very comparable so I don't think late 1sts are as valuable as you believe. I think I was pretty spot on as far a value goes on both Hudler and Russell.

In my opinion Wash would be insane not to jump on a Hudler for their 1st deal.

Maybe ask for a late Flames pick back.

If you are going for a cup and can add a legit 50 pt guy for no roster player you do it.

I am in the GTA as well and have heard that exact trade discussed in media here.

I would jump at that if I am Calgary. Bernier could find his game in what is essentially a one year audition with Flames playing behind a better defence.

Could also be wishful thinking on my end as I can't stand watching Hiller trying to get up off the ice once he goes down. It just reminds me of a fat guy trying to get up off a well worn couch.

They might have to move a few players out for draft picks in order to trade for a goalie.

I don't really know why the Flames would trade for a goalie after they're all but out of the playoffs.

They'll look for one in the off-season, but not now.

I think that they are looking to upgrade their goaltending and will do it when their best deal can be made, whether that be now or 6 months from now.

I'm pretty sure they can get a pretty good deal on Reimer as a UFA without trading anything for him.
