Yeah, those guys plus Bouma, Backlund, Ferland and Granlund. Admittedly not stars like Brodie and Johnny, but they were drafted and developed by the Flames and made the team.

Ah yes let's bank on a once in a lifetime pick on Johnny!
And Brodie was drafted in 2008!
EDIT (Backlund 2007, Bouma 2008!!)
The Flames only have 5 drafted players on their team since the 2008 draft
Monahan and Bennet - Top picks
Gaudreau: Amazing
Ferland and Granlund - 1 role player and 1 borderline NHL
If you don't think that's a massive issue with why we have some of the contracts we do I don't know what to tell you!
We need PLAYERS to fill out this roster!

Hiller for Bobrovsky/Lehtonen/Hammond/Stalock. Make it happen somehow. Please.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Gallagher
Skinner - Bennett - Frolik
Forget everything else. We will roll just 2 lines.

I don't want Skinner anywhere near this team, and there's no chance Montreal trades Gallagher.

Not sure how to address it or if it can be done at the trade deadline but the flames could really use some huge improvements in faceoffs... Both now and in the future. GF, GA, SV%, PP%, PK% all go up and down over the years but the one consistently low stat that plagues this team is a terrible face off %. Too bad Grant is injured for a while now cause he looked really solid in the dot during his last call up.

You're not taking into account that the there was a major overhauling of our management since that time, and the last 3-4 years are way too soon to be drawing conclusions from.
Just because because players from outside the first round in the last few years aren't currently on the main roster doesn't mean those drafts were failures. It's very rare for 2nd round and beyond players to make the jump that quickly.

Maybe. But that doesn't change the fact we need PLAYERS who can step in, not draft picks for next year. We don't have cap room to acquire players, and we have very little in the pipeline for next year.
We have been terrible at drafting and it's the reason we have some of the bloated contracts we do to fill out positions with NHLers.

Get Ben Bishop for anything other one of the "Untouchables" and our first rounder. Anything else would be fantastic.

No. Wideman won't be here forever. Go for the highest pick you can get

This is a tough question to answer. I feel the way the Flames are built going into the summer there will be very little ability to improve the team. Gaudreau and Monahan get massive raises and the team has Wideman, Raymond, Smid, Engellend, Bollig chewing up ~$17M in space next year. Outside of drafting Matthews or one of the Finns how are they going to add the 2-3 top 6 forwards they need?
One way to look at it is go with the current roster and hope there is enough internal improvement (a new better goalie will help) that the team is able to get back to the playoffs.
Personally I hope Treliving is able to clear some of the contracts off the books so he can be a player in free agency, and trade. Having an extra 1st would help but so would an extra 2nd and additional $5.25M in cap space

I'd take the first rounder every single time. Wideman at this point has negative value to most so why trade him? The team won't be a contender next year so his cap space and roster spot aren't exactly the only thing holding this team back. I'd try to deal him in the summer or keep him and hope he bounces back next year and becomes trade bait for the deadline.

I agree, Wideman's value seems to go up and down with quite a bit of volatility.
Might as well trade him at a high rather than a low. And if we're losing Russell, we'll probably be holding onto him until next year.
Not to mention, he has some control over where he goes. He might not like being "negative value" in a trade.

There is a lot to like about Jordan Staal. Big two way center who can skate. Only 27 so he'd be a useful core piece for years. Would be an amazing addition, except when you take into account his $6 million per year cap hit and the assets it would cost the Flames to acquire him.

I don't think Andersen is the solution to the goaltending problem, I think he will be lit up here also, just like every other goalie after Kiprusoff.

I don't know if I want Treliving to be a player in free agency. At least not on July 1. He has more misses than hits on that day. That may be true of most GM's.
Gather as many high draft picks as you can at the deadline and then use then as currency at the draft. Or stock the cupboards.

I would like to get a good, young goalie like Vasilevsky or Subban but that won't happen. If we could get bigger and meaner that would be great.
