The reason this is absurd is because even if Johnny carried the Flames on his back to the playoffs he still wouldn't be the most valuable. Holtby is carrying his team not only to the playoffs but to be the best team in the league. Kane is outscoring everyone and has been doing it all year.

He won't and wouldn't be considered close to the MVP because there are just too many others that are more deserving right now. I"m sure he might get a vote or 3 from some homers but I'm sure McDavid would too.

This thread reminds me of the Miller Light "Less filling/tastes great" commercials.

The truth is that the Hart is a kind of hybrid between the player who is most outstanding and the one who is most valuable to his team. Can't win it if your team doesn't have any success and can't win it if you aren't clearly one of the top two or three players in the league.

Don't think it's realistic for Gaudreau to win the Hart or for the Flames to make the playoffs this year. The points gap to Kane is even wider than the points gap for the Flames to make the playoffs. As good as he has been, Gaudreau has only two-thirds of Kane's points total. I mean they didn't even give Gaudreau the Calder last year!

Karlsson, Kane and probably Holtby would be my 3 nominees as of today.

As a winger Johnny needs to be top 3 in scoring to even be in the conversation. And probably first overall in scoring by a sizable lead to guarantee the award.

And on a PO team. I think he'd also have to even out his home/away stats.

IF the Flames finish strong and make the playoffs, and he moves up into the top 3 or 4 in scoring, I could see Johnny getting into the conversation enough to finish something like 5th or 6th in the voting.

The only possible way he becomes a finalist is if he went on an absolute tear and finished 2nd in scoring. And that ain't happening because in all likelihood, Hudler is getting moved at the deadline (and even if he weren't it won't be happening).

If he drags them into the playoffs, then absolutely yes. It will take an MvP performance to get this club in.
