There is a general belief that the Coyotes and the league only forced Scott into the trade in a bid to get him out of the All-Star Game. That same outrage - whether or not the Coyotes deserved to be on the receiving end of it - probably played a role in the NHL going from being "unsure" (un-huh) about Scott's eligibility to confirming it.
As Scott's article today demonstrates, the NHL has found new and impressive ways to turn this into a wave of PR disasters.

As an engineer, I have a profound respect for John Scott for playing hockey and studying at the same time. I could never balance that load while in school. I hope Johnny sets him up for at least two goals on Sunday for his soon-to-be-born twins, so that along with the all-star gloves he'll have pucks for both of them.

I am not really a huge tech guy or understand the costs associated with running a website but would Players Tribune have significant expenses?
The articles are submitted by amateur and professional athletes who I doubt get paid for their articles. Would this website cost anymore than a few hundred grand a year? Maybe just the publicity that Jeter gets from everyone including athletes makes this venture worth it?
Like I said earlier I have zero idea how much it costs to run that site.

They have a staff that basically ghost write a lot of these articles. My understanding is they are heavily edited.
My guess is jeter has his own or private money backing him. Focus on quality for now and then try and monetize later.

A compelling writer. That article makes the NHL look awfully bad and they certainly did a horrible job of managing Scott and the all-star vote.

I wouldn't be surprised if the architecture is being supported by someone else's site. Whoever is backing the site is probably piggy-backing the content on a server they use. There's very little complexity (code wise) to a site like Players' Tribune (unlike a site like CP or FB, etc.).

I don't understand why the NHL doesn't respect a player. A league should alwaus treat players equally from the best player to the worse player. It would be like the NFL crapping on special teamers who are the 50th guy on the roster. Hell there's a special teams coach and a special teams position at the Pro Bowl.
The NHL doesn't ban fighting but then turns around and call fighters thugs. I find it sad.

I feel differently now, great read, and a good reminder that I think a lot of people here (including myself) could use: these players are people. Whether you're talking about Scott, Wideman, Raymond, Colborne, Etc. These are human beings and while you have every right to judge their play on the ice, we have NO right to judge these people as humans and even BEGIN to know what they're thinking.
It's a lesson so many fans need to learn.
I look forward to cheering Scott on this weekend, and I'm glad he's part of the Pacific team.

Hosting that site doesn't look like it would be expensive. Few hundred a month maybe. Bigger expense would be content creation, editing, and content management. If they do indeed have a few staff that ghost write the stories that is possibly a large part of the cost.

I couldn't even balance school with sleep
I sure know the feeling of doing assignments and exams while every other program was out partying, to do that on the bus is a major kick in the balls. Kudos, John Scott.

Are you kidding me? What an idiotic thing to say.
The fans are responsible for the NHL behaving reprehensibly? How in the hell could any fan have even the slightest idea the NHL would react so poorly to Scott getting voted in? That an NHL exec would say something so needlessly cruel it would convince Scott to play in the game? That they would push through a TRADE to try to get this guy out of the game.
The fans are partially responsible? What arrogant idiocy.

Great read! Scott did the right thing here - held his head up high and carried himself with class. Still think it is totally idiotic that the NHL tried to get him not to participate, when some 'stars' suddenly have mysterious illnesses right before the ASG. Good for him to take the high road.
Stories like these makes us all remember that enforcers were every bit the wide-eyed kids who loved hockey and dreamed of playing in the NHL as the 'elite skilled stars' were. They are also every bit the athletes, only they have differing skill-sets. We forget that they are humans. We forget that they also worked their butts off to get to this level - sometimes working much harder than the elite stars we all cheer for.
I cringe when I see "oh great, another talent-less goon vs goon fight - yawn". Seems disrespectful. You can argue (and win that argument) that these guys don't belong in the NHL any longer, and have your say to anyone that wants to listen to you. It doesn't have to be thrown out in an insulting and demeaning manner, that's all. They are human, they did work extremely hard to get where they are, and their role is probably the most physically and mentally difficult one on any NHL team. Better to voice out demeaning insults at the NHL for allowing them into the league, or the individual teams that give them contracts, or the coaches for throwing them on the ice with instructions to do exactly what you dislike. They are not talent-less and heartless goons - they are enforcers who have a very difficult role that few people can do, and they are almost universally the most beloved members of their respective teams. This article just should remind us of the little bit of respect these guys deserve, regardless of your personal views on the role in general.
With that being said, I really hope his teammates set him up like crazy and he walks away as MVP. This might be the last year we see a bona fide 'enforcer' in the NHL, and that would be as good of a way as any to give that role a send-off. Fitting that he won the fan vote in retrospect - he may indeed be the last pure heavyweight enforcer.

Just to add what others have posted, this is an excellent read.
The NHL brass is who we know they are, out of touch and owner focused.
Are the Habs making any attempts to make Scott's wife comfortable?

There's a few enforcers who excel at school. Ken Baumgartner was a former scholastic player of the year and got his MBA from Harvard after his hockey career. George Parros was an economics major at Princeton.

The funniest part is that John Scott actually thinks he is one of the best 700 players on the planet.
Sorry, but I don't have much sympathy for a guy who makes his living head hunting other players...he embodies the worst aspects of the NHL and doesn't deserve to be celebrated as some kind of hero.
Sure, he has a family like everyone else and I'm sure they are proud of him, he seems like a good guy.....but that isn't going to change that his career as an NHLer has been shameful.
The reason he was picked was because some people thought; who is the absolute worst guy we could pick to embarrass the league?
He has my respect as a human being and family man like anyone else; but he certainly doesn't have my respect as a NHL'er.
