Ha? Have you followed Boudreau's coaching career at all? This how he has ALWAYS coached.

I want so badly to say Raymond, but I have to say Wideman.bboth are replaceable, but seeing Widemans, contract fired into oblivion would be so helpful. The thing is that either could surprise and put up 15g next year in a contract year.

Russell, the most valuable trade asset the Flames have. Move him and move on.

Curious why you think Russell will have more value than Hudler at the deadline?

1. Look at the historical values that defensemen go for at the trade deadline. Depth defensemen go for more than depth forwards.
Here's 2014-15 for example
-Timmonen for a 2nd rounder + conditional 4th (Timmonen had health issues at the time)
-Coburn for a conditional 1st, 3rd rounder, Radko Gudas
-Petry for a 2nd, conditional 5th
-Zidlicky for a 5th, conditional 2nd/3rd
-Ian Cole for Bortuzzo, 7th
-Simon Depres for Ben Lovejoy
-Wisniewski, 3rd for Bourque, Karlsson, 2nd
-Sekera for Roland McKeown (former 2nd rounder), conditional 1st
-Franson, Santorelli for Jokinen, Lepsic, 1st rounder

Is Russell that much worse than Sekera or Franson? Maybe slightly? Is he more reliable than a banged up Timmonen? Probably. Douglas Murray went for a couple 2nds a couple years ago didn't he? Russell should get us at least a 2nd, maybe more.

2. Hudler is playing like complete crap right now. Anybody scouting him can see that. He had one good game before he reaggravated his groin. If teams were down on Cammalleri's mediocre season the year we couldn't trade him for even a 2nd, then surely they aren't high on Hudler.

Based on Hudler's season so far I don't see anybody giving up a 2nd for him.

He has had a post Byng hang over season. He's a walking infirmary on the ice and everyone knows it. I think you can move him but the return is going to be lessened due to risk of continuous injury.

Russell on the other hand, is still top 2 in the league in blocked shots, has been at the very least a consistent top 4 D man this year. I know we here at CP watch every breath of these players under a microscope but if you pull back, Russells body of work is quite good and teams want him.

Wideman, first and foremost. But Russell, Backlund, Bolig, Jones, Hiller, Stajan, and Raymond are all up there as well. The coaching staff will get sacked quick enough.

For sheer uselessness, gotta be Wideman.

Russel, Hudler, etc, are still useful players which would be solid additions to a playoff team.

There is no way Raymond is movable so don't even consider him anymore.

You must be thinking of someone else. No, this is definitely the first time we've seen his team play like this.

And frankly I don't see why this is so awful if it gets them back to the playoffs. He's adaptable and realized he needed to change the way his team played to keep up. If only our coaching staff was capable of something other than hail mary hockey.

Anyway a toss-up between Russell and Hartley for me.

This is a tough call to pick only one player but I'm going to say Raymond. Totally useless out there and will be done in the NHL after his contract with us. (He should be in the AHL already) Doesn't show any heart, looks like he is playing out his contract and knows he is done already.
Johnny. Too small for the big leagues.

Hamilton. His advanced stats and lack of grit are what is making this the 26th placed team.

Honorable mention goes to Frolik, I read somewhere that he isn't good either.

Backlund - never liked him, got a lot of flack here back a few years ago when I strongly disagreed with people seeing him as the future first-line centre. Too soft, too predictable, too inefficient.

Hartley - never liked him either despite the award last season. When a coach keeps repeating "we have to play our game", I lose faith in his smarts. You have to play a different game against a different team exploring and capitalizing on opponent's weaknesses. This is how other teams are winning against Calgary.

Don't agree with losing Colborne yet - yeah, he sucks now, but he's way too young to call for his head. He's got the potential to be a very good player. Just needs to be coached right.

If Wideman breaks his scoring slump, he is fine. Overpaid, but fine. How quickly people forget what he was like when he got here. His defense has improved with age. He is verrry slow, but his positioning is sound more often than not. For a 5th d-man PP type, he is useful in that role when scoring. We don't make the playoffs last year without him stepping up his minutes and not being a total liability. So while not an long term answer, and definitely a guy you get rid of after his contract unless you can cut his salary at least in half, if he starts scoring he is not that big of an issue.

I do not understand the hate for Russell. The guy is a warrior and plays a #4 role. You are not going to find a better #4 defenseman. I was going to type more but he just blocked the rest of my post about him.

My choices and reasoning:

Raymond, for obvious reasons, but the most obvious is that he is taking the place of someone who could learn on the job and provide the same thing or more quite easily.

Colborne, the experiment has failed and any chance of a breakout seems gone. Worth the attempt with his size and skills, but he just lacks hockey sense. He never seems to be in the right place and his hands or brain fail him at the worst time.

Hiller, I have never had confidence in this type of goalie. It was frustrating when he had his good seasons because blocking type goalies need to get extremely lucky with rebounds, or have a team built to do nothing other than clear rebounds when on defense. Turek was a lot like this, so was Giguere. When you have a team that does that well, you get seasons like their best ones, when you're not a team that does that well, you get seasons like this from Hiller and the majority of the seasons of the other mentioned goalies too.
