I was at the game tonight! Canadian Armed Forces Appreciation night is always a blast!
Joe Colborne was simply awful every time he touched the puck, giving away free turnovers. Backlund looked lackluster at best and needs to take passing lessons, he iced the puck three times with missed open passes. Granlund looked invisible most of the night, but it's hard to blame him with his line-mates. I think it's time for Joe to be sent to the minors.
Brodie and Gio were horrendous, we simply cannot have our top defensive pairing giving away pucks and slowly moving out of the defensive end.
Engelland and Wideman both had solid nights. It was awesome to see the powerplay click and score both of those goals back to back, with a near third opportunity hitting the side of the post.
Ramo let in two soft goals, but it's hard to blame him since they were the result of turnovers caused by Brodie and Gio.
Who is the guy in the Harvey the Hound suit this year? He is simply awful at getting the crowd fired up.. C'mon it's not that hard to hit the drum at the right tempo to get the crowd to chant "GO FLAMES GO", instead he was just slamming on that thing making it impossible for chanting together!

Personally thought Backlund had a great game.

Great? Great?
If that's a great game from a player it explains why we are on the outside looking in.
He is an average player on a non-playoff team. He doesn't have a spot to play on any playoff team.

Backlund is a perfect 3rd line center and hes playing just like it, what's the issue?
Anyways. Looking more and more like the December stretch was a bit of a fluke. Disappointing.

I thought the Flames played really well. Very pleased with the effort. Sharks got super lucky, and that's the way it goes sometimes.
Colborne was awful though, wow. No excusing his play tonight.

It was a bad turnover that he recovered on. That shot should have never found the back of the net, it was an unlucky deflection.
2 assists, 6 shots on goal, and creating lots of chances. One of the more noticeable Flames tonight.
He has been lacklustre this season at times but tonight was one of his better games outside of that turnover. It's a bad penalty too but it's not a habit for him so I'll let it pass.

Gut wrenching loss. Not Hamiltons strongest game IMO but other guys played very well. The Flames are just not a good team yet.

Colborne will be out of the league in less than two years if he keeps this up. God awful game from him. I cringe when he's on the ice. Just doesn't have the drive to be a regular NHLer. No compete level.
Flames deserved a better fate but a select few decided to be selfish.

Couple bad turnovers cost them but I felt they were far and away the better team and deserved the win.

Just perception I guess. Johnny's been bugging me for a few games now, trying to hard is all that comes to mind. He had four turnovers in two shifts near the end and other players had to make good plays to avoid others.
I did watch on my laptop so maybe it wasn't the greatest view but I never really felt Calgary was in control of the game or had any great sustained pressure. Good shifts and chances here and there but that's it.
I had a ####ty day when written and sick kids so maybe I'm seeing something that isn't there. Want upset with the band just not overly impressed.

Not a great game from Backlund bt he was also one of the only ones who came to play in the first period. Thought he generally played well aside from his 3rd period penalty gaffe.

IDK about Backlund. He might be a passable third line center but far from perfect. Improvements need to be made in several places up and down the lineup. Agree you can live with Backlund with 1 and 2 are exceptional.

I'm not shy about calling out the goaltending but this wasn't on Ramo. Maybe the 5th goal but even then it was off Gio.
It was partly bad D coverage, partly ridiculous puck luck and bounces for San Jose.
Games like this where it seems to be out of your hands no matter how well you're going piss me off though. Flames deserved points here. Sharks had to work half as hard as us to get their goals when any other game the past few weeks it wouldn't have been the case.

On the plus side, I thought Hamilton looked really good tonight.

Typical Flames loss where they generate chances and pot four but gift wrap the other team goals and play like garbage in their own end. This team needs to be about a million times better defensively if these guys want to sniff the playoffs anytime soon

I hate to agree with this but it's looking more and more true. Colborne really is regressing. Not good.

Yeah blaming Ramo here is nincompoopery. Dude plays like 97 of the last 99 games, much of which was played very well, proceeds to take a puck in the jugular the day before the game and still suits up like the Finnish barbarian that he is. I chalk this one up to some bad puck luck, a couple of mistakes, and some sub par execution at times.
I agree that Colborne had a very tough night. Seems to really be fighting it lately.

Bennett, Ferland and Backlund were the best Flames tonight, over the 60 minutes.
Bennett and Gaudreau try a bit too hard to take the team on their back when looking for the equilizer, though. But Gaudreau has routinely made gaffes trying to do so lately. Takes the puck down the wing over the blueline, looks for a pass but doesn't find one, so turns back, slowly skates back towards the blue line and gets it poked off his stick and out of the zone, killing the play and the clock. I think this has happened a few times in the last handful of games in the final minute. Gaudreau I think needs to simplify things and just move it to the D if there's no initial pass. Gotta use and trust your teammates in those situations.
