The NHL has a way of robbing the Flames no matter how good the player is. Seen it too many times. It was everyone's dream to see Gaudreau win that Calder Trophie, same with Iggy's Hart Nomination that was lost to Theodore. I don't even think St Louis would've won anything besides the Lady Bing award if he was still a Flames. The awards are a joke and voted by panels who watch mostly eastern teams.

Let's all enjoy the Gaudreau Holiday Spectacular and the net results to the Flames. Over analyzation is that. He has played world class and the result is our team wins plus highly entertaining to watch.

I'm a big Gaudreau fan but calling him a "Superstar" is a little premature. "True Superstars" were/are Bobby Orr, Wayne Gretzky, Mario, Yzerman, Messier, Roy, Hasek, Sakic, Iginla, Crosby, Ovechkin, Kane. Players who have put up multiple seasons of Hart Trophies, Art Ross Trophies, Pearson s, Vezinas, Conn Smythe, Stanley Cups, Olympic Golds.
A player that put up 60 points in his rookie season & 40 something halfway through his second is NOT a Superstar. Is he on his way to becoming one? Definitely if he keeps doing what he's doing but he is not there yet. Not even close.

Meh. It's all semantics. All depends on how you define "superstar" and you'll get no consensus here

Firstly, the NHL has changed A LOT. Guys simply can't dominate like they used to because now everyone in the league is a pretty darn good skater and player. The definition of superstar is changing.
Secondly, he is close.

Johnny has the ability to take over games and is a draw for fans in every arena that is the makings of a superstar

According to Jack Adam's winning coach Bob Hartley, Johnny is right up there with Sakic, Forsberg and Kovalchuk:

Quote:
Hartley, who can name Peter Forsberg, Joe Sakic and Ilya Kovalchuk as just a few of the stars he’s coached, believes Gaudreau has pushed his way into that mix.
“He’s right up there,” Hartley said.
|
I guess you can argue Bob saying Johnny isn't a superstar. But I'll take Bob's opinion.

100 point player.
Probably mid 80s this season, his 22 year old season. Makes it easier to confidently say so when you know how durable he is too.

Especially when Ekblad might not have even had the best rookie season for a defenceman. See: Klingberg.
It's dumb when d-men enter the equation because generally the role of a d-man is much more highly valued than a winger, so how can the winger win other than putting up 100 points and leading the league in +/-...the league was crushing on Ekblad from day one, no one else stood a chance.

Meh I'm not too hung up on Johnny not getting the Calder. We all know he had a great year. So did Ekblad.
Iggy losing the Hart was a travesty though.
Nevertheless, the big goal is and always has been the Cup. The rest is just merely "nice"

Gaudreau named NHL 1st star of the week
Ekblad winning the Calder was expected, but Gaudreau coming third and Stone second was straight up robbery.

I've been saying Johnny is turning into a legit superstar to my friends and family. When I say that I'm just judging him based on the rest of the league not the all time greats.

And that's how he should be judged.
What sets guys like Sid & Ovi apart, is not only are they superstars of their era, but they are compared to all-time greats. That makes them generational, in addition to being superstars. Sid's points per game and Ovi's goal totals are amazing stats that will finish right near the top of the all time standings.

Where was he last night?
I really like JH and think he'll be a very good player. Perhaps even one day a star or even superstar. I wake up this morning to read in posts: Sakic, Forsberg, Gretzky etc. Folks, let's be realistic again. The kid is the first star of the week, not the second coming of McJesus.

That was Mr Bob Hartley who said that, not I.
Bob is probably just pumping the tires of his current star player, but in all fairness, Bob has won a Cup and a Jack Adams. He knows a thing or two about puck.

Are you joking man?
What crazy expectations if you're serious. Pretty sure Sakic, Forsberg, Gretzky etc didn't go through their entire careers on an endless point streak either.
Bonkers post.

I saw Patrick Roy give up a 9 spot to the Red Wings, guess he sucked too, eh? Gretzky's Oilers lost 11-0 to the pathetic Whalers in their 80's prime, etc.

The way the Ducks were playing last night didn't exactly make it easy to generate offense either. Gaudreau cant be the savior every single game.
