I guess the answer is, we wouldn't likely sign him now, as we want to see more, and he wants more time to earn more cash. But he's been playing well only for as long as he was struggling so far this year. A month a go everyone was fine with waving him based on 6 weeks of struggles, now we are willing to re-sign for more money based on 5 weeks of good play.

Not in any large way, no. I was just thinking $4M for 3 years is largely what he's offered so a bit of a bump for a 3 year commitment, and recognition that he has taken #1

This is essentially a raise for him. His present salary is inflated due to the fact he took a 1 year deal; the Flames paid him more to walk into an awkward situation where there was a large risk of him going to the AHL.
The next contract would offer him stability and the chance to be the undisputed starter, something which I think he would value.
Lets not forget, no one picked him up on waivers and no one else was interested during free agency...I think Kari would be interested in $4m (or potentially slightly less)

Whiiich is a really good point. I have thought that a $3M per 3 year contract would be ideal for Ramo, but didn't think that offering him less was fair to recognize him as our starter.
With that point, I'm thinking that $3-$3.5 with a 3-year really would be plausible and a 'promotion' of sorts, in that he has a commitment.

3.5-4 per for 3 years sounds about right for someone with his average numbers. Consider we'll no longer be paying 4.5 mil for a backup and that's not bad

Possibly very slightly, but I think you should also consider that salaries go up over time. This means that recent signings will on average be slightly "overpaid" in comparison to average.

I'd think so too. I also think that number is close enough to his value that it doesn't matter. It would put him among the cheaper starters in the league, but he was very close to being pushed out of the league.
Offering term could drive the price down though. If I was him and the Flames offered me 3 years for a combined 9M, I'd take the safe money.

There is no rush to re-sign Ramo until the end of this season. While we all acknowledge his improved play and confidence in the last 20 games or so - there is still almost half the season to be played.
Assuming he gets a further 30-35 starts yet this year, Treliving will have a much more complete body of work on which to base his decision. Will also be helpful to see how he handles the pressure of delivering must win games when a play-off position is at stake.
And then, assuming the Flames make the post season, how he handles the increased scrutiny and pressure of being a play-off goalie.
It would be a big commitment to re-sign him for another three years and Treliving must wait and see if that is the right move.

Risk vs. Reward scenario available here for sure.
Brad will have to trust his instincts as to which Ramo (start of season vs. now) is the real Ramo. But if we wait until the end of the season, his price certainly drives up if the Flames make a run. With how Ramo is playing now, he will be a major contributor to that success.
Right now, we can still cite his slow start as a reason he'd be happy to take $9M-$12M over 3 years.

It's pretty clear that at the beginning of the season what management wanted was Ramo as the starter and Ortio as the backup (and Hiller moved out in a deal that didn't fall into place). I don't think we can underestimate what the three goalie situation did to the psyche of all of the goalies - they were all terrible. If there isn't a clear upgrade available through trade or free agency, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the Ramo-Ortio tandem next year that was the plan for this year.

Its possible we don't see Ortio in the NHL again IMO. I certainly don't think the team wil go into next season with him pencilled in on the NHL roster.

The way he's playing I'd like to see Ramo re-signed. I think that anywhere from $3M to $5M per could be fair. As for a backup, I'd like to see Ortio and a couple of others fight for that job.

I wonder if he read this thread because he's playing way above average against the Yotes tonight.
