Gaudreau will get paid. A young American player with this much offensive flair is something 23 NHL teams South of the 4th would love to get their hands on. There's also 6 other teams in Canada hating themselves for not drafting him.

I think Treliving will sign both Gaudreau and Monahan to 1 year bridge deals ($4 to $5 million each) to get them past the Wideman, Smid and Stajan contracts. That will allow a little more room under the cap for the $8 million/year long term contracts they deserve.

I'm guessing a bit less than Tarasenko at 7-7.5 and long term that sees Johnny through his best-producing years as a Flame.

I remember reading... possibly from Friedman? Though I'm not sure that the expansion draft is likely to be salary-based as opposed to player-based. Teams will only be able to protect a certain amount of salary, and must leave a certain amount exposed.
Also, it's believed that an expansion draft overrides NMC's - there's nothing in the CBA language about an NMC preventing a player from being taken in an expansion draft.
We're likely looking at expansion at least once if not twice in the next 2-3 years. Getting Johnny Money, and Bennett on bridge-deals to take them through that period might not be a bad idea and would allow us to keep a contract like Giordano (if we wanted) or a goalie (if we can get one) protected.
The issue with that is that their next contracts could easily be Kane-Toews level deals. If we could get Johnny for 8 years at 7 I'd be more than happy. Money at 5 by 5.5, mostly because his agent will want him to have a shot at making huge dollars in five years.

What's the incentive for Gaudreau and Monahan to sign one year deals?
If I were them I'd want as much money guaranteed for as long as possible.

Why would they agree to this?? They are RFA but really the ball is in their court. Wouldn't want to sour your two best players.

How so? They have some leverage in the negotiations, but not as much as you seem to suggest.

I think Monahan will be a 6 X 6 contract and Gaudreau 8 X 7.5
Any less $ wise is a great deal.

Every game he is becoming more and more of a super star. He is known across the league now as one of if not THE best offensive talent on the ice any given night. He makes plays that no one else in the league can do. I'm not just saying this as a flames fan... There are very few players that stand out as much as he does every game. Probably only 6 or 7 guys in the whole league.
Just look at the ranger game. He put up 3 points but very easily could have had 6 points that night with all the chances he created.
The flames will need to at least match Tarasenko's deal. And it's a good deal for both sides.

If he's a PPG player (or better) he'll be making more than 7 million.

Because they'd get bigger contracts in one year than they'd get this summer. Simple math. Treliving would be up front about it. No hard feelings.
