Bold prediction when our Matthews Coefficient (A thing I just invented where I subtract our odds of making the playoffs per SportsClubStats.com from our odds of winning the draft lottery) is 12.3. Columbus currently has an MC of 11.0, Toronto's is 7.2, Carolina's 6.9.
Everyone else in the league, even Edmonton (-9.4) and Colorado (-12.5) have negative Matthews Coefficients.
This is obviously a stupid metric and I haven't had enough coffee today. I apologize.
Still, bold prediction, hope you're right!

Well despite getting some results we're 30th in the league since all the other basement teams have played more games and won them. I honestly have no ####ing clue how Toronto is ahead of us.
We're also 29th and 30th in special teams.
Goaltending under .900
All I'll say is it'll be a hell of a story if it happens. The kind of stuff you write books about. Okay, maybe not really..but it's a steep, steep climb.
And if the wheels fall off again, well you can always look forward to
Gaudreau - Matthews - x
Bennett - Monahan - x
Brodie - Hamilton
In the future. However, I will not cheer for it.

The advance stats people will find stats to explain it though. You can bet on that. Statistically speaking. 😏

San Jose will implode in the end (the question being is it the first round of playoffs or end or regular season).
I don't agree about Arizona. They have many of the same things going for them as we did last year and I would bet them making it.
That said I think we are in the thick of things at the end and hopefully they squeak in with momentum!
|
Nope. Arizona is no good. They're already imploding as they've lost 4 in a row and probably should've lost to the Flames before that, too tbf.

No team starting Kari Ramo in net for the majority of the season will ever make the playoffs. Lets ride things out and hope for the best but also be somewhat realistic in that this team took a step back this season.

They have a long way to go. The only way they will have a legitimate shot is if they collect 18-20 points this month. 9 or 10 wins out of the 13 games. Sounds like a lot, but you have to figure the other teams will finish 1-2 games above .500. To beat that, you have to be significantly better.
SJ - 18th
BUF - 23rd
NYR - 4th
@ NSH - 11th
@ DAL - 1st
@ STL - 6th
@ DET - 6th
WIN - 18th
EDM - 28th (tied with CGY for last with Carolina)
ANA - 23rd
LA - 8th
They have to win 7 or 8 of those games. They have a long way to go.

When the Flames go 0-4 on that road trip this place will be back to the depressing state it was in following that blowout loss to the Sharks not long ago.

Today is December 7 and the Flames are currently 30th in the league. Dead last. So to my surprise I see that somebody has started a thread to declare that he/she thinks the Flames will make the playoffs.
Reading what I just wrote you would think that somebody forgot to take their meds. However it isn't an entirely crazy notion. Unlike past years, this could be the year where somebody in the Flames current position does indeed make the playoffs.
The likeliness of this is very low, but this season it is much more feasible only because the Pacific Division is so weak. Anything can happen.
Anything can happen. I'm not writing the Flames off yet... at least I'm not ready to accept the inevitable truth. Not yet.

It's been said a few times and in different ways but it boils down to this team just not being good enough...this year. Some of the Flames top players are "off" and the team isn't playing well. They're in last place and they haven't played a stretch of good hockey yet this year. The games they lost, they lost convincingly. It's not like they were in charge and the other team stole the game. The games they've lost, they should have lost. You could actually argue that some of the games they've won should have gone the other way. Either way, their record is what their record is. They may have 2 games at hand but it's not like they're getting their all star players back and they're going to go on a tear. The rest of the division is terrible too but they're still doing better. The chances of the Flames going on a winning streak and making the playoffs are really low, sure anything can happen but if you're thinking that way, why not bet on Mason Raymond scoring 40 goals? Making any kind of trade now to save the season would be a huge mistake, if anything they should be capitalizing on some players playing well and making moves for the future.
I still love this team and I'm still excited but being realistic about things doesn't mean anyone cares about the team any less or isn't as much of a fan. I still hope for individual players to do really well and I think they can but I just think the team as a whole will finish 25th overall or lower.

Easy to call it, but would you bet you own $ on it?
