Oxygen-depletion (“hypoxia”) has recently reached levels that can sicken or kill cod in large areas ("more than 1000 km2") of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and no live cod have been found in these areas in recent surveys done by The Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) (2). (see map at right - click on map to enlarge) Why a shortage of oxygen? Bacterial decomposition (rot) of dead organic matter (animals or plants) exerts a severe oxygen-draining effect on seawater, and this process is widely recognized as a primary cause of “hypoxic” seawater. This is how ocean “dead zones” are being formed in various other parts of the world ocean (e.g. the Gulf of Mexico, Chesapeake Bay, Baltic Sea and others) (3).

Those hypoxic dead zones generally are caused by runoff from farms both fertilizer and manure from livestock, short term addition of a relatively small amount of sewage out of montreal is not going to appreciably alter them.

Yeah, I just like to educate people about our dying oceans. Saying the sewage dump appears to be not appreciable is skirting the issue, like saying what harm can one more cigarette do?

Dead zones can be caused by natural and by anthropogenic factors. Use of chemical fertilizers is considered the major human-related cause of dead zones around the world. Natural causes include coastal upwelling and changes in wind and water circulation patterns. Runoff from sewage, urban land use, and fertilizers can also contribute to eutrophication.[8]

So let's dump all raw sewage directly into rivers and oceans.

Actually it was clearly the goal of the previous government to control the science and direct it towards a more pro business (aka hush up about climate science and environmental issues)..
We have not even 2 weeks of this new government, are you not going a bit far by suggesting this government only will listen to science it agrees with?
I mean the whole point of taking the gag order off scientists and respecting the importance of it in our economy, in our future, is about accepting consensus and having rigorous debate and therefore dissenting opinions are key.

This issue feels like a lack of science literacy mixed in with partisan politics. They had no other good options, there is an urgency to doing this, they consulted the right people and took action.
Its a crappy situation.

This was a calculated parting shot from Harper to the Liberals.
Similar sewage releases occurred during Harper's reign and there was nary a peep from him or his party. This one was set to occur close to the election so Harper forced a moratorium until just after the election. Unfortunately, one the first duties for the new government was to end the moratorium and get the bad press. There really wasn't an alternative or choice in the matter.
Hopefully something gets done in the future so this doesn't have to keep happening though.

Meh, needs to be said over and over. I loathe anti science stuff from both left and right.

So I've got a few barrels of untreated nuclear waste that I acquired for reasons. In now a good time to road-trip it to Montreal? Get in some poutine and semi-legal waste dumping?

Or Victoria. They dump 50 billion L of #### a year into the ocean.
Mind you, with no good poutine or hot French girls, Montreal is probably your better choice.
Call when you get here. Beers are on me.

Sadly the government who would love to help you is no longer in power.

Funny that you like to complain that other people are too partisan.

Is it partisan to suggest that the previous government was not exactly environmentally sound, or dare I say would look the other way if business benefits for some harm to a lake or two?
Or is it just that I disliked some of their policies and therefore that makes me partisan?

It's partisan to suggest that the Conservative would love to help people dump nuclear waste into the water. Obviously you were being over the top but it does say that you feel Conservatives don't care at all about the environment which is not true.

"dont care at all" was never the suggestion. But lets not deny the fact that if you deny climate change you are much more likely to be a conservative. The polices again, are pretty clear, cutting from departments responsible for our environment, to muzzling scientists, to quietly allowing lakes to become dumping grounds for mines.
But of course, no one lost their minds over that, the tiny sewage release in Montreal is the big problem right?
