I don't get why everyone acts like first we need to find this magical candidate that the entire league seems to have ignored and THEN we can fire Hartley.

Fire Hartley, Place Gelinas as the interm coach and have a normal candidate headhunt. The list of candidates for an NHL coaching job is not exclusive to ex-NHL coaches with plenty of experience. Every great coach got the "first shot" from some one.

You've been talking about the team 'salvaging the season' though. Do you really think Gelinas has a better shot of coaching the team into the playoffs then Hartley? Or do you have a different definition of 'salvaging a season'?

When someone is absolutely bombing at work, day in, day out for over a month and your company starts to get destroyed by the competition, do you wait until you find the perfect candidate to replace them? No you fire them, take over their responsibilities and start looking for a replacement candidate. It makes even more sense in the NHL cause you have a whole team of support staff under this guy that know how to run the day to day duties.
If you fire a head coach you almost always don't want his assistants either. Firing without a plan for replacement at the beginning of the year especially, is no plan at all. You can sometimes see it towards the end of the year, when there's nothing to salvage.

"First shot coaches" are not hired because the GM didn't have a plan. It's because the plan was to to give that coach a chance.

I said other and not because some of those guys aren't better options than Hartley but because they aren't better options than what will be available in the off-season.

I think you keep Hartley for the season and fire him then.

I can't think of anyone I would want to hire that is available now and there are no internal candidates that I would want to be anything more than an fill in coach. So unless Hartley seems to be damaging players or is unable to work with Treliving I would likely just keep him and fire him at the end of the year.

If they do need to fire him I would have Gelinas, Huska, Conroy or some other internal guy fill in and look to hire someone in the off-season.

A couple of guys I would like to look at- Kevin Dineen and if at all possible Dave Tippet. Those would be my top two guys off the top of my head.

I almost refused to vote, but I decided to go with the only other man I think can win the Stanley Cup with Calgary pending his almost simultaneous firing:

Sutter. Bring back Darryl if we can no longer have Hartley.

It is a crappy season so far, but as we are still in rebuild bad season or not if he is the type of leader that is good for the team you keep him.

It may not be exactly the same but this season is reminding me of Colorado getting in s playoff spot then next season they "rank" & win the macKinnon lottery and following season back in the mix for decent position again.

Sometimes bad seasons just happen.... If it went two seasons like this then yes I'd agree to fire Hartley. Overall I think this is opportunity to bring up Arnold or others rookies & let them learn struggle then succeed at NHL level.... cast off veterans that aren't part of future plans

What worries me most about Hartley's performance this year is that I'm not seeing nearly as much of "Always earned, never given". And when the accountability in the room suffers a setback, that's never good for the team.

Monahan struggles? 1st line minutes.
Giordano struggles? 1st pairing minutes.
Wideman ####s the bed repeatedly? 1st pairing minutes.
Goalie stunk it up? Well, I guess that's a different story altogether.

He's still demoting/sitting some people when they're in an 'off' phase (like Jooris, Raymond, Bollig) but he's giving IMO waaaaaaay too much slack to the veterans. Ice time in upcoming games should be kept to a "what have you done for me lately" basis, but Hartley seems to go with a "what did you do for me last season" basis. When the players behind the top lines are doing significantly better but still not getting the ice time, where's their motivation?

Any time you're gonna keep loading on the minutes on your best players even when they're struggling, that really hurts the organizational culture. What Hartley should do to reset the accountability in the room:

-Promote Bennett - Gaudreau - RW to 1st line (because they've been playing like it)
-Pressbox Wideman
-If Gio still keeps struggling with Brodie, demote him to 2nd pairing.
-If Hamilton keeps improving, stick him with Brodie instead.

This is just silly and accomplishes nothing. If your desire is to save the season, I don't think running with the asst. coaches until you find a suitable candidate accomplishes that. Unless you think Gelinas knows how to fix the team and is just keeping the ideas to himself? If that's not the case, then the season is already sunk before you have a replacement.

If you're just hoping to shock the team into action there are better ways to do it than trying to have a new coach/system implemented partway through the season.

The issue is that there is no other option right now. If Calgary ends up a bottom 5 team, I'd still put my money on them EXTENDING Hartley rather than firing him. We are a hair over 10 games in and you're calling for his head? It won't happen. Not now, not before the end of next year.

Get used to Bob Hartley, because he is the reigning Jack Adams winner and is nowhere near the main problem resonating with this team.
