Let's just start trading all our 2nds and 3rds for more 4ths.
I wonder if there is something to the 4th round where teams start to draft on upside more, and take their so-called "flyers".
I'd be keen to know what round has produced more stars: the 3rd or the 4th.
Probably nothing to it more than just the Flames being lucky.

Kid is killing it right now. Looks like a legit top 4 guy currently.

Kulak has legitimately looked better than Dougie Hamilton/Jokipakka since his call up. There's a lot of poise in his game, makes smart plays, doesn't rush and is his patience leads to better breakouts. I've been thoroughly impressed with his performance up to date and could see him usurping Dougie Hamilton's position very soon. Coaches seem to think so as well since he played 20 minutes to Dougie's 15 tonight.

What a slap shot that guy has.
It's great when a bit of patience pays off... Ever since his demotion to the ECHL a few years back he's been our most consistently improved defensive prospect. I hope he's here to stay.

I like the cut of his jib. A very nice piece going forward and will only compliment or Swedes in development. Blue line looks impressive going forward.

I don't think Kulak just looks better than Hamilton. If their pedigrees were reversed, so would their contracts and playing time.

I will admit that I was never a big Kulak fan. I was wrong. He is really developing into a solid player.
As several people mentioned in the PGT, he and Engelland were the best pairing last night (quality of competition not withstanding).
Especially since the season is probably a write-off anyway, his ice-time better continue to rise and he should be placed in more and more key situations as he continues to grow.
He will be a legitimate top 4 on this team very soon.

You probably have to protect him over Giordano at this point.

I agree.
But I wonder if exposing Gio is a bad idea, simply because it decimates his trade value at that point. Whether he gets picked up or not.
If you are really thinking about exposing him, don't you do everything possible to trade him in advance?

a few weeks ago everybody said the same things about Kevin. These things can change very quickly. Maybe Shinkaruk has a nice stretch at some point or Poirier or Klimchuk have a convincing stint with the big club. Thank god the Flames have some great depth in the system - they'll probably lose a nice young asset in June, but can deal with that thanks to good drafting, scouting and development.
Anybody who thinks Giordano shouldn't be protected is going to be disappointed.

what I've noticed is his center of balance, and you can't teach that. He's a heavy player in that he can just lean and control the puck with the opposing player kept at bay.
With the team sputtering they may want to try him and Hamilton together and see if they can create two pairings that can dominate.
And that's to take nothing away from Engelland who has been solid.

So if Kulak maintains his current level and Gio/Brodie/Hamilton maintain theirs, do you protect him and leave one of the other guys exposed? Gio has an NTC not a NMC so he can be left unprotected. But given his age and contract would LV take him if exposed?

Well maybe you've just explained why it's a good idea to expose Giordano as it essentially allows us to protect 4 defencemen.

Of course LV would take him if left exposed. They need to hit floor cap, they need top 4 D-men, and they need leadership. Still think that the flames can get good value on return for Gio if they trade him before the start of next season. I think any GM looks at his contract at running out in 2020 CBA, so its not really a 6 year contract.

Hamilton at 5.75 for 4 more years? that means the Flames could quite easily "protect" 6 defensemen.

If Kulak continues to play as well as he has been, I could see Treliving engineering a trade for Dougie Hamilton. Teams have been calling about him and if he still has good trade value, I would pull the trigger. Keeping Kulak who has outperformed Dougie and is 10% of the cost is a no brainer to me.
