Good. I think Lamoriello sucks and has for a while. A product of a long-gone era.

The real winners here are Devils fans. We hated the last years of the Iginla and Kipper era because the team was just treading mediocrity being good enough to make or miss the playoffs and nothing else. It's been like that for a long time in New Jersey and clearly change was needed as they have been saddled with one of the more boring teams in the NHL for a long time.

this move definitely has its drawbacks and it's advantages for the leafs.

pros:
they are building a unique/diverse management structure but almost everyone involved is a rookie in their roles at the NHL level. Bringing in one of the most experienced guys out there to help guide the group is a good idea

cons:
the devils roster over the past few years has been a bit of a mess. Losing kovalchuk definitely didn't help matters, but the team seem to be trending towards a place where old players go (jagr, cammalleri, havlat, gomez, ryder, clowe). HF ranked the devils 30th as far as team prospect rankings go in the spring of 2014.

Still, if i were a leafs fan, i'd be happier today than yesterday. The GM isn't some newbie advanced stat guy, he's a seasoned NHL management Vet who's got plenty of respect around the league.

So will he fire Babcock and take the bench just before playoffs?

This feels like more of a "Lou knows how to treat players and he knows which 1yr vets will bring character to the locker room that had none" than "Lou is here to build a championship team"

This is good. Lou is motivated to prove he is still relevant and to distance himself from ownership meddling.

I've got a reason to actually follow the Leafs now. Curious how this will all play out.

I don't think it's so much leadership they are looking for as much as experience and existing relationships and rapport with other GM's. Essentially it is a safe guard against someone "skinning" a newer GM or one without the respect Lou brings.

The big question is does the NJ Devils blog "In Lou we Trust" change its name to "In Lou we Trust-ed".

Chris Johnston @reporterchris
The #leafs will forfeit a third-round pick to #NJDevils in 2016, 2017 or 2018 for hiring Lou Lamoriello.

This is the guy that signed Travis Zajac to a $5.75M 100 year deal? Kovalchuk? Ryan Clowe got almost $5M a year from this guy...

He's not unlike another Gm who was an epic horse trader but a terrible contract guy.

Uncle Lou leaving NJ is such a paradigm shift for hockey. Crazy that this actually happened.

Will he do well there? not sure but if you were a name dropper this T.O management team is an A-list of hockey names.

Shanahan says George McPhee was a finalist for the GM job.

My larynx says, "Huh?". So, Shanny is hired to basically do nothing but hire Lou to fix all of the Leafs problems.

I'm a little shocked that the view is so negative here on this hire. I understand he's part of the older cohort in the league, but adding a Hall of Famer in the builder category isn't the worst thing a team can do. Where there's smoke, there's fire... so wouldn't be shocked at all if rumours of ownership in Jersey pushing some of his more questionable moves are true.
