Lol...yeah not really a doomsdayer. But nothing else holds/preserves wealth like gold. Nothing. Cash of course is ok in the short term, but this is long term investment. Every paper currency eventually goes to zero due to inflation. Thats the point I hold a percentage of gold...not for the end of the world.
And yes, I realize gold doesn't make a good investment, it provides no income. It is to preserve wealth. Plus its much harder to tax when you give it to your kids!!

I think having actual physical gold, as opposed to a piece of paper that says you have gold, is never a bad thing as a supplemental insurance policy in case crap really hits the fan.

Just out of curiosity, where would one even sell gold at market value? Let's just say hypothetically you invested say $1k in gold bars/coins in 2015 and opted to sell it off in 2025.
Do banks buy gold? Jewelers? Other folks on the internet?

Just a heads up, if you are in calgary (or winnipeg) Albern Coins has much lower premiums on precious metals than what Mocatta offers. Certainly isn't as convenient though.

I think the key word is "market value". You'll always get less than market value when you sell. And you always pay more than market when you buy. You might find buyers online willing to pay close to market, but generally not. Gold is traded much differently now and in the form of etf's and stocks that are valued based on the physical gold they own. So they go up and down based on the market price of gold. The commission your brokerage charges to trade stocks is basically your only cost to own in that case (some charge fees but they're really small). And you just sell on whatever exchange it is carried on. In that sense it has become a tradable issue which is much different than its previous roll (you don't have to pay for storage, pay large commissions, load the wheel barrel and walk your stash down to the exchange). That's partly why it's not acting as it has in the past in regards to global catastrophe. But people do like to hold real bars so owning a stock isn't going to convince true "stackers".

Just curious, how is it harder to tax when you give it to your kids? I also scratch my head at how a dwindling commodity preserves wealth. I think you'd do much better trading the general trends when it comes to gold.

That Xi can sell this line to 1.6 billion Chinese and wash everything away is much scarier.
Edit : Suckered in. Doesn't happen to me much, but what does it say that I bought this so easily?
