I can definitely see how the powers-that-be would want to make things a little more commercial at the expense of the dedicated community.
This seems to disagree:

But Reddit isn’t just an online community. It’s an ad-supported business. The company celebrated its 10th anniversary last week and, according to The New York Times, raised $50 million in venture capital last year, money it planned to use for hiring and improving its advertising business. The private company does not disclose its revenue, but it has been valued at roughly $250 million.

Yeah that's pretty good knowledge of some underground subs. Kinda sucks that r/coontown can continue and r/fatpeoplehate cannot, but hey that's how the internet works. Doesn't make me Reddit any less. Just stay out of racist/bigot subs just like you stay out of racist/bigot websites on the internet in general.

Honest curiosity, why do you hate Reddit so much? The internet is supposed to be uncensored, from government injustice to the worst dredges of human cruelty. Reddit is a filtered conduit of those things, and if you don't like it you don't have to see it. It's made that way.

Sounds like PsYcNeT just needs a firewall for children, to help avoid those bad areas of the internet.

Reddit threads are second only to Pearl Jam threads where the CP smug mind loves to pile on.

Grats on perpetuating the worst of the web however.

"Oh no someone doesn't like popular thing!"

Yeah, weirdly enough, the only real smugness seems to be coming from you. "There's evil in them there reddits and this here cowboy rides for justice and truth and the straight & narrow way. Turn, turn all ye who enter Internet-land, for it is a den of iniquity. I am the way, the truth and the light out of the darkness that is reddit - follow me & HiHoSilver away!"

I think everyone is aware. Reddit has bad ####. Don't go there if you think it's filth. It's hardly the only area of the Internet where this stuff is so you've got a lot of work ahead of you, if you're after awareness. But it's kind of like the gay marriage thing - don't like it, don't get married to a same sex partner. Don't like ####ty parts of the Internet? Don't go there. Not all that hard to avoid.

By the way, nice hotlink of SA's emoticon there.

If it makes you feel any better I had no idea what reddit was until you went off about it a few years ago so I went to check it out. Now I am hooked.

The point I'm driving at is that other "area(s) of the internet" don't simultaneously host awful content while hosting acceptable content and explain it away with a "MUH FREEDOMS" mantra. Typically the awful stuff is it's own terrible entity. Dogboners.com doesn't exist alongside clubpenguin.com.

Also CP doesn't have hotlink/hosting rules, and I was lazy.

Same here. I knew of reddit but I had never given it a chance until Psycnets glowing review

Just like the Internet, reddits a big place. It's easy to avoid the ugly places and just frequent the subs you enjoy

People on CP complained like crazy when sponsored sub forums were added, some even stopped posting.

Would you keep posting here if there were sub forums dedicated to shaming women who dumped their boyfriend/denied them a date, sharing photos of pre-teens in bikinis, and plain old white supremacists?

I sure as hell wouldn't, thankfully that isn't a decision I've been faced with, because CPs mods aren't awful people.

You can't compare a small community focused primarily on a single sports team to a huge site that has more subforums than CP has users. Reddit calls itself "The Front Page Of The Internet" and with it you get everything you can find online, good or bad. So yeah, you're going to find people being #######s there, but they're easy to ignore.

I enjoy the positive discussions in the smaller subreddits, and as the funny pics thread shows, most of the jokes and meams on the Internet start, or grow, there.

It's tough to police such a large, user-curated site like Reddit, and they haven't always done the best job, but I think it's a positive place overall.

So being of a large scale absolves them of responsibility for the content they host?

I don't buy it.

I'm not sure what your fascination is with saving people from the cruel world that is reddit, 4chan and multitudes of other websites but it really is an exercise in futility.

There are dark places, bigots, pervs and idiots all over the world. Your insinuation that everyone that uses reddit supports these gross ideals is the same as saying you support these websites by using the internet. If you must continue on your holy crusade I wish you the best of luck in 'washing' the unclean masses of their evils and support of false idols,
let them see the errors of their ways and show them the true light by casting aside all those that support the means of these false prophets.

This is a false corollary however, as the internet =/= reddit. Reddit is a single private owned, privately run entity that has an administration group that has the ability to control what content it hosts (as the June backlash showed), while the internet is a loose connection of servers owned by millions of public and private entities worldwide.

Conflating Reddit and the internet is a pretty massive logical leap.

The whole reason people switched to Reddit was due to the freedom of posting and lack of policing, it is very much like the entirety of the internet. You can choose to partake, or not, in whatever you wish.

I believe.

Except posting jokes about fat people. That's apparently not kosher, but racist memes are a-OK.

It is when you keep stating it over and over again adding nothing new to the conversation
