No problem with this here either. Not sure why, but I much prefer Ramo over Hiller.
If Ortio EARNS a spot in TC and pre season, awesome. If not, he goes down and very unlikely he gets claimed as every other team would have their stable of G's set and Ortio would have to remain in the NHL if claimed.
This is a win for everyone IMO.

At some point you have to roll the dice with a young guy like ortio as backup. I believe now is the time.
I would be okay moving Hiller for futures.

I don't mind this at all. One year term for Ramo to fight for a spot as a starter, and for another contract. I expect to see a lot of compete out of him this year. We need a goalie who can steal us some games while the kids develop.

That's my only concern.
I've always wanted a Ramo/Ortio tandem but I certainly don't want to lose Ortio on waivers so I hope they tread carefully.
Still like the move Hiller and pay half of his salary and get say a 2nd instead of a 4th.

Signing Ramo buys the team time to assess Ortio's readiness in training camp. There had to be a plan B in place in the event that he takes a step back, and a one year deal would indicate that's all this is.
My expectation is unless Ortio absolutely lights it up in camp, they will expose him to waivers and bring him back up for a few games throughout the year. Then trade one or both of Hiller/Ramo at the deadline (possibly with salary retention as you said) for extra assets.
Every year there is fear and panic about guys getting claimed off waivers after camp, but it almost never plays out that way. Just last year Markstrom passed through waivers unclaimed, who IMO was a more proven commodity than Ortio is now. If the Flames themselves don't have a good enough read on Ortio yet to hand him the reigns right out of the gate, I don't expect other teams around the league would, either.

I see this as insurance, if Ortio impresses during training camp, should be able to move either Ramo or Hiller on those contracts.
Also, they might have a few potential deals for Hiller, but wanted to signed veteran before moving the only veteran under contract

Creates competition for the position, which is precisely what the organization is all about. Makes perfect sense.

I can get on board with this signing. Hopefully we can move Hiller for something.

I have to believe Ortio gets claimed if he goes on waivers. If people are giving away first rounders for young backups like Talbot and Jones, Ortio would surely be had for free? Would be a shame given his potential and the time and resources spent to develop him up to this point.
Of course, the Flames probably know the goaltending market as good as anyone, and would have shopped Hiller if the intent was to potentially re-sign Ramo. Perhaps they know something we don't?
Sending Hiller down to the AHL is also an interesting option, but I don't know how realistic that is...

I approve of this signing. I would like to see Hiller moved as part of a package for a RW.

If they place Ortio on waivers I would not be a happy camper. Sooner they trade Hiller the better.

I bet Treliving's plan is something like Ortio goes to the AHL after camp when nobody gets claimed off of waivers, Gillies gets eased into pro hockey by backing up Ortio, the Flames go with 1A/1B until someone in the league gets hurt and Hiller or Ramo get traded mid-season

I think that there is no confidence that Hiller could win against the Ducks in a playoff series. Better to have two goalies that have a chance to get through the gate keepers of the Pacific.

I'm in the "Run with Ramo/Ortio" camp. Flip Hiller for assets or cap dump for pick(s) to sign a RW and D depth.
I don't see how we can run with 3 goalies. Exposing Ortio to waivers would be a disaster.

I don't see why this should automatically mean Hiller is gone. If anything this just sends a message to Ortio that he needs to earn his spot. If he does I see whoever impresses Hartley less getting dealt.

The goaltender market kind of dried up, which is likely why Ramo re-signed. What are possible destinations for Hiller? Is Edmonton the only team left? Can't do that to Hiller.

Smart move for the Flames. Clearly the Hiller Ramo combo worked for Hartley.
Jmo Ramo could have got more and 3 years from anothed team in UFA market.
Glad Ramo decided to stay.

The thing to always remember with waivers is that the team that claims a player must keep him in the NHL. If they want to send him down to the AHL at any time during the season in which they claimed him, they have to put him back on waivers, and the team that originally owned his rights can reclaim him and send him to the AHL without additional waivers (if they were the only team to put in a claim the second time).
So, for a team to claim Ortio at the end of camp, they would have to believe that he's a better option than the backup they went into camp with. That is extremely unlikely with a goalie.
That said, based on some of the things Treliving has said in the last couple of weeks, I still think he has a deal in waiting for Hiller, and has just been looking for a starter before he completes the deal.

I'm happy with this, let all three battle it out in camp and the bronze medallist potentially given a chance elsewhere and see what we can get in return. I'd hate to lose Ortio though but it's up to prove himself in camp and earn his spot. He's the same draft year/age as Robin Lehner so it's time to shine.

Not to mention that other teams will be putting players on waivers at the start of the year. It's easier to get them through at the beginning of the season.
Having said that, I hope Ortio proves that he is ready and forces a trade.
