Love the player. Really like what he adds to the team, but i'm not doing 9 million.
My thoughts from the other thread a few weeks back are the same. Paying a 37, 38, 39, or 40 year old player $7,000,000 is a mistake.
Give Gio term and front load the contract.
Front loaded contract. Contract drops with age. For reference sake, Stephane Robideaux's contract this year as a 38 year old was for $3,000,000
Dan Boyle $4,500,000 at age 37
Bryce Salvador $3,250,000 at 38
Gonchar $5,000,000 at 40
6 years:
$7,000,000 (2016/17 Age 33)
$7,000,000 (2017/18 Age 34)
$7,000,000 (2018/19 Age 35)\
$4,000,000 (2019/20 Age 36)
$4,000,000 (2020/21 Age 37)
$4,000,000 (2021/22 Age 38)
$3,750,000 (2022/23 Age 39)
$3,750,000 (2023/24 Age 40)
Average cap hit is $5,000,000

He'll end up getting around $8.5 million. Impossible to replace what Giordano does.

When you look at the amount of players the Flames will have come out of their entry deals by 2022 that $5 million cap figure for a 39 year old player is absolutely crippling as that's Wideman cap money for a guy that won't be nearly as good at that age. Flames would be extremely lucky if Gio at 38 years old could play as well and as many games as Dan Boyle did this season for the Rangers and even at that Boyle only got 20 points. The salary really doesn't matter as you would be talking $15 million in cap money still left on the deal at the age of 38. It's just too long of a deal with a $5 million annual cap hit.

I kind of don't care the price, more the term like others said.
Give him $8m to $9m AAV for 3 years. Anything longer and I think I would be disappointed until the AAV went way down.

4 years, 30 M (7.5 M cap hit) would be fair to both sides IMO. That would take him to the beginning of his age 37 year old season.

Don't even negotiate with him on a 3 year...done deal.
If he wants term of 5 to 6 years he better be closer to 7.0 - 7.5 per year or it will be a boat anchor of a contract. Coming off a serious injury and 33 years old at time contract kicks in...hope management doesn't make a huge mistake here.
Love the guy but truth be known this team shouldn't be a legitimate perennial contender until the 2017-18 or 2018-19 season.

That is simply to much money (depending on the term of course, but let's be realistic...he is not signing for less than 4 years)
I love the guy as much as anybody but lets remember that he only has a season and a half of elite level play under his belt (120 games). Let's also not forget that he will be 33 years old when this contract kicks in. In addition to that he has not proven to be capable of playing a full season in over four years.
Those are all factors here that quite frankly non of his "current comparable's" had at the time of their respective deals.

Except for that time they went 12-6-3 to end the season and then won the first round of the playoffs.

I love the guy and hope that a deal gets worked out...but the Flames went something like 12-6-3 without him in the regular season and won a playoff round to boot.
Excellent player, great captain yes absolutely.
Impossible to replace, no.

I'd pay him 9 mil per. On a 2 year deal.

Man, how good does Duncan Keith's deal look right now (13 years $72 mil)? 5.5 per will be a little rough near the end of the deal, when he's 39 years, but right now it's an absolute steal.

If there's one thing Treliving has shown that he excels at, it's re-signing players to good contracts in both dollars and term. I'm confident that Gio will be extended at a reasonable price.

That's why they made them illegal. Chicago better have enjoyed their ride, going to be in cap hell for a long time.

I'm guessing it'll be 4 years at $8M or 5 at $7.5M.
