Insurance and licensing appears to be a common concern regarding Uber in various municipalities. If they wanted to, Uber can easily get around these issues by tweaking their system from a ride for hire service to a "car pooling" service which doesn't have a mandatory set rate charged to the end user after a trip but rather uses a "tip" based transaction. Most municipalities encourage car pooling so they shouldn't have a probably with an Uber car pooling app system which connect drivers and passengers.

And there are a lot of cities and higher level governments that aren't fine with Uber's unlicensed services. Calgary's not a alone in this regard.

A lot. Over 30, i know for sure. But they don't dictate policy and it could be the case that the city is just stalling..

Maybe there is only demand on weekends because that's the only time people can justify paying the rates. Or if it's extremely cold out.
Was in Chicago had great uber experiences. Tried to tip a driver 5$ because he was so awesome and he refused it and said it was all built in.
Get back to Calgary, get in cab, airport pickup fee was 8.75 and just as the other guy said we were at $20 just to get to Deerfoot trail.
Uber. was denied based on the fact that the city was opening more cab licenses, this is kind of going back on their word.

Totally agree with this post. If cabs were an alternative, then more poeple would forego buying a car, and use taxis more often. Unfortunately, they're so hard to find, so often, that instead, everyone has a car, and only tries getting a cab on Saturday night after a few drinks. It's a vicious circle that has contributed to Calgary's addiction to personal vehicles, and, by extension, made the taxi industry less relevant. Just look at the increase in cycling and the popularity of Car2Go, and it's obvious that there are tons of Calgarians that really want to wean themselves off of owning their own vehicle, but for most, it's just not feasible. Having a thriving taxi industry would probably really put the idea of not owning a car a solution for many.

The difference in price between a Car2Go trip and a Taxi trip to the same destination is downright appalling. Almost 50% less on short trips. Costs like $20 to go to the airport in a Car2Go from my place. Closer to $50 with a cab

The city has a group of people in legal that aren't lawyers that act as lawyers.
Think about that. It's the truth.

There is an app called 'TaxiGuy' that is free that does the same thing as #taxi. The android app looks like it was designed for the first Android phone ever, but it works. Can also call 1-888-Taxi-guy...

Bit of a bump for a joke of a night when it comes to taxis.
It was painfully obvious that there would be a lot of cabs needed last night downtown. Based on what I saw, it's lucky there weren't multiple accidents from drinking and driving.
It was about 2:30am and there were some cabs around - those of which who had their lights on seemed to not want to take anybody. We flagged down multiple (essentially having to step in front of them after we realized none were stopping), all of whom threatened cash only and were very selective about who/where they would take/go. We saw multiple other folks hiking it down 17th trying to get cabs as well.
What a friggin gong show.
I swear the cab situation is becoming more and more like I've seen over seas with various taxi "mafias" - so monopolized they get to choose when/where/how much.

The size and population of this city versus the amount of cabs in this city is extremely embarrassing. Why we are still bickering about adding cabs.... I'll never know. It's like their being run by the frickin' mafia in here.

I will never take a cab unless my work pays for it, and is thus, basically a project-related run to the airport and back. We use car2go, and cycling exclusively, and given our current location in the Beltline (close to our employment), we have absolutely no need for a car in the near future.
Taxis are an absolute joke in this city, and I will never give one of those companies a dime of my own money.

Edit: Double post.
Also, does anyone follow Uber on Facebook? Every targeted post they have about the Calgary market has these hilariously obvious planted posts by taxi drivers in the city regarding Uber's safety record with women. Puhhhleeese.
