I wonder if/when Hathaway gets an NHL contract? He's looked very good in stretches for Addy.

McKenzie expects Baun to make his decision today, right?

Yes and no. It's more than money, it's a certainty of "getting a shot". There's a very good chance many of these guys won't get a real shot. They gotta do it if they can

Nope. It's their 'right' as a free agent.
Flames did it last year with both Gaudreau and Arnold.
Just makes Treviling's last signing that much better.

Probably a good depth move to shore up Stockton.

And Hanowski and Agostino the year before.

I just hope that it isn't the only thing they are considering or it is really short sighted.

The Flames may not want to burn a year seeing as we are fighting for a playoff spot, but a RW prospect at the age of 22 or 23 would stand a good chance of at least playing a full season in the NHL on the Flames next season.

No. It's a bargaining chip and they have no reason not to use it. No team has to accept. And I'm sure that it's only one of a number of factors in the decision.

For picking up a free asset, burning off a year of the ELC is a no brainer.

It will really be a positive sign when one of these top sought after fee agents who isn't an Albertan chooses to sign with us....don't think we've had that happen yet.
(Don't think Jooris was particularly "sought after", he'd be the only previous one)

Yah I get that. It's an option available to them. and why not. gets you one year closer to being a UFA again.

seems to becoming more and more common.

It was very slightly different with Gaudreau, since he was drafted by the Flames, as opposed to being courted by a number of teams.

Mark Divver @MarkDivver
Looks like Colgate free agent RW Kyle Baun going straight to an NHL roster, per Bruins source. Doesn't sound like it will be Boston's.

Love to hear that coming from Mackenzie. It does give us an interesting problem though, can we afford to play a rookie right now? Would we be able to burn a year off of his contract if we mostly had him sit in the pressbox?

I don't care about burning a year....it just starts getting a little Justin Schultz like when players pick there destination based on a promise of NHL games. If he is ready, then fine, but better for all if he can get sent to AHL without a hissy fit.

The only problem I have with it is since we are in a hot playoff race, we aren't as able to offer that choice as easily as other teams.

Likely going to a non-playoff team if guaranteed an NHL spot. If the kid was smart, he would wait it out and not kill his career potential like Justin Schultz.
