Expect him to do the job that night, and then have another drawing the next game.
As far as the rules go, the only thing special about the captain is that he is allowed to talk to the officials. The alternates aren't even supposed to do that, IIRC, unless the captain is out of the game. Wearing an A is mostly symbolic. Wearing an A for just one game symbolizes that everybody has a chance to wear it. If the point is to say that every player is counted on to lead by example, then excluding Engelland or anybody else would kind of defeat the purpose.

With Giordano out and Glencross traded, who will be the third "A"?
I really felt the Oilers were onto something with their Leadership-By-Inexperienced-Committee experiment.
I'd say Gaudreau, Monahan, Bennett, Brodie, Baertschi and Granlund.
Also give the C to a fresh face defenceman, Schlemko (hope that's how his name is spelled, haven't learned it yet as im sure the rest of the team hasn't either) is as good a candidate as any.
Realistically it's a crime Back/Brodie don't have a letter already
If we go with rotating,
Hudler Russell Backlund Brodie imo

I don't know why Glencross wore a letter over Backlund in the first place. This should be a no brainer.

The answer is Backlund and it should have been that way all year imo.

I like how guys here speak with authority on who should have it. On any hockey team I ever played on, the A's were dealt out based on leadership and commitment, same as the C.
How do you know the dressing room dynamic?

One guy who keeps increasing his stock to wear a letter is Bouma. Maybe not this year but soon.

I don't see Bouma getting a letter before Mony,
It'll be Hudler/Russ/Backlund until Gio gets back, then Gio/Hudler/Russ.
but FWIW http://flames.nhl.com/club/roster.htm
Russell isn't listed as a A any more, maybe the team is revamping the leadership group after this afternoon.

I would love Backlund to get one because he is a bit younger than Hudler, Stajan, etc and would show him that he is viewed as a leader for this team and a big part of this team moving forward.
Whenever I played sports a high performance team, we always tried to start creating leaders from the youngest players so they could naturally fall into the captain roll later in their career and it always worked out well.
If it isn't Backlund then I would pick Monahan. He is already a leader and he very well could be the future captain of this team.

@NHLFlames: "I'm very proud to be able to name Wides an alternate captain because I think he's grown a lot." - Hartley on Wideman donning an 'A'
@Fan960Wills: Hartley asked Asso. Coach Cloutier, Asst. Coach Gelinas, GM Treliving for input on Alternate Captains. Wideman's name kept coming up.
