Huge game statistically; SportsClubStats gives us playoff odds of 78.3% w/ a regulation win, or down to 64.3% with a loss.

^ nobody knows what's going on, including NHL.com I wouldn't read too much into anything. Coaching staff still might not even know.

Even if Engelland was playing with Brodie, it wouldn't matter whether you would call them the first or second pairing.

Flames players talk about their solution to replacing Gio - each of them plans to step up - so let's call it "step up by committee" solution. It is easy to see how much these guys respect Gio. Also no sense of panic amongst the players - more a sense they can get the job done.

Love how Wideman says "If teams want to take the night off against us or take us lightly, we'll accept that"

Embracing the underdog role.

I don't. If it's close, might default to a defensemen, but best player available is still the priority.

Agree - Burke has always had that philosophy. But then you've just got more assets to trade for d-man.

As much as I dislike Engelland, pairing with Brodie makes the most sense.

If you did it another way, by moving Russell or Wideman up, you'd break up both of the usual top pairings, not just one. This way you at least keep the "2nd" unit together. The only other way would be to put Potter/Wotherspoon with Brodie.

Brodie's mobility is needed to mitigate Engelland's immobility. Hey Engelland - just stand in front of the net - Brodie will take care of both corners, and passing the puck.

Russell and Wideman will increase their minutes and probably be the de facto top pair - they've sometimes been the top minute pairing anyway.

That's just a terrible idea.
I have a feeling Russell and Wideman will play more than Brodie and Engelland

Tonight this team is going to show we aren't a one trick pony. I can feel it. These guys are going to demolish the Islanders despite the loss of Giobot.

Like the Brodie Engelland pairing, brodie makes up with Engellands lack of footspeed and passing ability. Engelland provides some physical play in front.

It would be pretty interesting if they played with 7 guys tonight and played Engelland on the wing if needed.

I think that Brodie, Wideman and Russell will all play a lot tonight. Brodie will get the most ice time IMO.

And I think the team will have a surprisingly good night despite losing their captain. That is usually how it goes when your super star, do everything captain goes down.

Glad Bollig is scratched again. Poirier has more potential upside. I have like what I have seen through 2 games

Gaudreau family just spotted in the crowd on Sportsnet.

Love that they're following the team on this trip!

Sportsnet, please use the Guy Gaudreau camera, use it fast and furious. I wouldn't mind a little picture-in-picture.
