Coquitlam teen 'swatter' jailed, told to grow up
http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/va...987/story.html
A provincial court judge urged a Coquitlam teen convicted of “swatting” and harassing people online across Canada and the U.S. to “re-engage with the real world” and grow up.
The 17-year-old, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, pleaded guilty to nine counts of criminal harassment, eight counts of public mischief, four counts of extortion, one count of uttering threats and one breach of bail conditions.
He was sentenced on Thursday in provincial court in Port Coquitlam to a two-year custody and supervision order — 16 months in jail (minus credit for time served) and eight months under community supervision.
The teen found targets — who were gamers and predominantly female — for his harassment online. When they would not acknowledge friend and follow requests or send him photos he would attack them, their families and friends.
He flooded their social media accounts with spam, called and texted them at all hours, cancelled their utilities, posted their personal and financial information online and swatted them.
He was initially facing a total of 46 criminal charges.

Pretty scary. If I were the judge, I would think a mental health examination would be beneficial, in this case.

TL;DR
Quote:
The graphic artist and father of four lost his job shortly after his arrest, which was well-publicized online, and if convicted, could go to jail for six months.
These are astonishing repercussions given that it’s not alleged he ever threatened either woman (or any other, according to the testimony of the Toronto Police officer, Detective Jeff Bangild, who was in charge) or that he ever sexually harassed them.
Indeed, Elliott’s chief sin appears to have been that he dared to disagree with the two young feminists and political activists.

Like the previous SJW, there won't be any repercussion's on the accusers from the government/court of law. At the most, if the charged is found innocent, he could pursue them for civil charges (maybe libel? or is it slander? IANAL), but that may be just gravy in comparison to the potential civil suit against the Toronto PD for arresting him on false grounds.
Ok for further illumination of the court case, the dude basically pursued when the girl declined any further interaction. So just to muddy waters even further how much is too much?

Particularly on the basis of what looks like, in anything one can see, as merely disagreeing with her politics.

Mr. Elliott is believed to be the first person in Canada to be prosecuted for criminal harassment via Twitter.
He and Ms. Guthrie, a prominent feminist and activist, met online in the spring of 2012 when she advertised for someone to do a free poster for an event she was organizing for witopoli, the Women in Toronto Politics group she co-founded.
Mr. Elliott responded; they even met once IRL (in real life), for dinner, where she says now she recognized immediately a “creepy glint” in his eye but nonetheless continued to have a professional relationship with him for a short time because she was hoping for that poster.
Plus, as she put it once Wednesday, with a weary sigh, “We live in a world that forces women to second-guess those feelings…‘Did I really feel creeped out?’ So I second-guessed it.”
Interestingly, Ms. Guthrie considers feeling creeped-out a “form of fear”.

I swear to God, this absolutely HAS to be a misplaced Onion article.
Whatever the legal test is for abuse of process, this proceeding absolutely must meet it. If it doesn't, change the test.

These are appearing on a weekly basis; Bruce Jenner, Rachel Dolezal, Donald Trump, etc... It's like the Onion is able to predict the future in a mild capacity.

We don't have to speculate that this will have a chilling effect on free speech; after reading that article, I'm going to be much more cautious about engaging people of certain ideological stripes online.
We live in strange times. So much hostility is now being channelled through superficial social media, and yet a new generation who embraces this technology has been raised with little respect or understanding of free speech, and a hyper-sensitivity to criticism. And it seems to be getting worse. I'd wager more Canadians are going to be affected by this chilling of discourse than were ever silenced by the Red scares of the Cold War.
