Why don't we engage in starting a thread of where to shop around Calgary for maximum efficiency for value/quality. It's hard, sometimes I feel ripped off at community and somethings not so.

Safeway/Loblaws/Superstore/Co-Op are not anything I can attend for anything more than base ingredients. Is this thread worthy?

Whole Foods is such a genius business model, play on the naturalistic fallacy and people's fears of the food supply being so bad for us...

I love to hit Whole Foods when I travel and am looking forward to them coming to Calgary. I wouldn't do my main grocery shopping there. However, they've got a ton of unique stuff that isn't available elsewhere. Community is getting better but still has a way to go so the competition hopefully has them step up their game.

There's no guarantee that they will have the same products here in Canada as they do in there US stores, in fact I wouldn't count on it at all. Ive always thought they had a neat concept, but it will b e interesting to see how it flys up here. Let's just hope it is no another Target situation.

Lets not get our Co-ops mixed up. While I agree none of the coops are going anywhere (there's really no one to buy out to take control from based on how they're structured), Federated Co-op =/= Calgary Co-op. They're related, as Calgary owns a bit of Federated but is operated completely separate. Also Federated runs a refinery complex and that plus the petroleum sales (refined products, retail sales) make up a good chunk of that $10B you're talking about.

Just curious, is there any reason someone couldn't make an offer to the members to buy Calgary Co-Op?

I agree that that the structure and the association would make it difficult for a company to buy out Calgary Coop not to mention that the members are likely unwilling to sell. Calgary Coop apparently does $1 billion in annual sales.

Are they unwilling to sell though? I mean I have shares in the Co-op and basically never go there. I would bet that if someone said we'll give you $X per share as we want to buy the Co-op you could get a majority pretty fast. I know it would have to be a fair offer, but people would likely jump at the free cash.

I'm only one member but I wouldn't be willing to sell. Coop is more valuable to me as a consumer than a few dollars. We currently get about $300 in patronage benefits per year and it would actually be difficult for me to take my business elsewhere. Costco and Coop are my go to stores.

My issue is that everything seems to cost more there. So yeah, I get this patronage benefit, but really I have just paid more in the first place, so I didn't really gain anything. I also think that if anyone were to buy it they would be buying it to keep it open anyway. So let's pretend it was an existing grocer who wanted Calgary exposure...as a consumer is there really a loss? I mean if someone came to me and said here's $50/share (I have zero idea how many shares are outstanding or what they're worth, or how many I even own), I would take the cash for sure. I would bet most people would.

I don't find Coop to be any more expensive than comparable places like Safeway or Sobey's. It is certainly more expensive than Superstore or Wal-Mart. The shopping experience is much better though and it is much more convenient. I will pay for that convenience and comfort.

CTV does a monthly price comparison. Coop, overall, is the second cheapest after Superstore.

I love the refreshed Co-op's deli and meats sections. So great to stop in on nights where I don't feel like cooking. I think last summer, I had kabobs on the bbq twice a week.

As far as Whole Foods goes, a lot will depend on the brands they bring in. Much like Target, if they are just stocking the same Canadian stuff as other places, then who cares. If they bring in some of their stuff from the USA that's unique then we might have something.

Im very happy about this news, Location will be key to a successful launch obviously, I live part time in vancouver, and i love the fact that whole foods are everywhere in van. Their Hot Bar while costing the same ironically as a sit down meal, is amazing.

Oh, it's outrageous. The whole thing. So many cashmere-sweatered shoppers.

That would be awful.

We need a Bulk Barn in the NW though.

I'm very curious to hear more on the reasons or these 'timing challenges.' That mall has got to be 50% empty right now.

That's got to be a kick right to the teeth of Northland Mall. But Whole Food just seemed all wrong for that location.
