They must see him as more than just a bottom pairing d-man because he's played in nearly every game this year, so it's not like he's not in the lineup regularly. However, he was only playing bottom pairing minutes and little to no PP or PK time, so I imagine they want to expand his game a little and eventually take over for someone like Kulikov or Mitchell on the 2nd pairing.
I think it's because Olsen still has the odd brain fart that they want to work out of his game, and Petrovic has also shown that he's pretty nearly NHL ready too, so they needed to see what he has to offer on a nightly basis.
