per McKenzie
changes to nhl.com to come on Feb 20
NHL is still debating on using names like Corsi/Fenwick vs using descriptive names that accurately depict what the stat is tracking
lots of visualizations and filters to be rolled out on April 20

Fenwick and Corsi won't be used. New stats will be launched tomorrow on nhl.com
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/c...names-nhl-com/
Quote:
The terms “Corsi” and “Fenwick” won’t be part of the redesigned NHL.com when it is launched on Friday, Sportsnet has learned.
The league has instead decided to label the statistics “shot attempts” and “unblocked shot attempts,” according to sources, in hopes of making them more understandable for a broad audience.

That is a great decision by the NHL. Hopefully they have a replacement name in mind for PDO as well. Looking forward to checking out penalties drawn tomorrow!

Indeed. Always disliked seeing them named after people. Descriptive names are much better... I hope the NHL.com breaks them down into counting, rate, and relative.

Here's the four-phased rollout plan over the next couple of seasons: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-pu...031047083.html

I wish there was a way to filter by minimum number of games played. I don't care if Drew Shore and Corban Knight are the Flames' leaders in some categories for their one game played.
Also, on the "penalties drawn" stat, I don't think it should include offsetting penalties. I really only care about that stat to see who's creating power plays for their teams. If you fight a guy, you're not drawing 5 minutes worth of power play the penalties are cancelling each other out.

Growing story in the analytics community is that nhl.com didn't give any credit to any of the people who pioneered the stats they are now using.

That's not surprising. Ego is one of the biggest flaws the analytics community suffers from.

Maybe I'm missing it, but is there anywhere to see zone starts?

Sorry if this has been covered already but screw those nerds. To my knowledge no other sports name advanced stats after people, I'm thinking of things like WAR and PER. What's the big problem? Descriptive names are better.

Considering I don't even remember what those names stood for half the time, it's a no brainer to go with descriptive stat names since only a very small minority knew what the names represented.
