That was the best rendition other than those of Andrews that I have ever heard. And I've watched SOM a lot of times.

Yeah, not the best response, so I'll be more specific.

This last comment makes me so angry. Not only is it patently false, as there were great performances from Reese Witherspoon, Felicity Jones, and especially Rosamund Pike, but he subtley diminishes the entire female profession with that comment, saying there "wasn't much competition", when in fact there was, at quite a high level too. It's a stupid baseless opinion, and it's pretty misogynistic as well.

This is to compound the fact that he hadn't even watched the film, or her performance, or even had enough knowledge about it to comment on the subject of her performance, but then goes on to suggest it was a pity award, and they were rewarding her for past performances. Doesn't back it up in any way other than giving his opinion that Moore has had some "terrible performances" of late. So not referring to anything specifically, but uses it as justification for his last comment, despite the overwhelming critical praise and general industry consensus that it was a very exceptional performance. His opinion is uneducated and asinine, and backed by nothing.

Just off the top of my head, Moore had 2 exceptional performances in the last 5 years besides Still Alice; playing Sarah Palin in Game Change (2012), and Jules in The Kids Are Alright (2010), both films being highly critically acclaimed. Would anyone say the same thing about Matthew McConaughey winning last year despite having some truly questionable roles and performances in his career? No, because the work stands up, and if the poster had bothered to watch it, he wouldn't say something so baseless and demeaning. It's an indie film with a $5 million total budget, so not knowing the plot or seeing advertising for it isn't shocking and finding out the most basic of details is incumbent upon the audience.

In short, I said he was an idiot because it was easier than typing all that out.

Jiri asked why you thought it was okay. Pretty sure you being lazy isn't a good reason to call someone an idiot.

You're pretty arrogant Cali, especially when it comes to movies. Take it down a notch.

I'll post my reply when I'm off the clock, but yes that was clearly uncalled for. I'm entitled to my own opinion just as much as yours. Last year there was a strong field, so it can go both ways; without me "diminishing" the category as you put it.

I also do like Julianne Moore, but she has had more "bad" performances than good one's in recent years. See Seventh Son as an example of this.

Who cares? The guy gave an opinion. It's a message board. You think it's a big deal that he didn't explain in detail why he thinks it's a weak year or what specific movies Moore has been bad in yet you just called him an idiot and walked away. How about instead of writing that crap you just ask him to expand on his opinion. It's also not misogynistic to suggest that Oscar nominees are weak in a particular year. I personally think that last year for instance was a stronger year for both male and female actors.

Yeah, and I cop to the fact it was over the top and inappropriate. I didn't say it was ok at all. Everyone on this site has moments where they adamantly disagree and start questioning the person's thinking abilities. There's the ever so popular "what are you smoking", which is basically saying the same thing but less aggressively.

I was pretty irked this morning and normally I would just ignore something like that, but it just aggravated me and I posted something I shouldn't have. I had trouble self-censoring. So be it. We are none of us perfect.

Don't really appreciate the arrogant label though. That's not how I normally respond or post about things. Just had a weird day.

How you treat members of a community is the business of other members of that community.

It also appears to be common theme......

I wonder if I actually looked if I would find other such comments.

To be fair, the assertion that the Flames should be trading Gaudreau to maximize the return of said trade, a few months into his NHL career, is pretty idiotic.

oh, I agree, it is not a good idea (to say the least), nor was/am I a fan of the poster that started the thread.

That being said there are ways to say things and there are ways to not say things.

Yeah I agree, this instance didn't call for it really, but good on Cali for coming back, owning up, and giving a full explanation for why he said it.

I will concede though, that sometimes a person just needs to be told what an idiot they are being.

Moving on...

How freakin late did the show run over? My PVR cut out as they were awarding Best Director. Missed Best Actress, Best Actor and Best Picture. Were there any good performances or notable moments in that time?

I felt it dragged immensely in the first. I think they gave out 2 awards in the span of 30 minutes. Might also be a time for NPH to give up hosting. I don't think he did a good job of this at all.

On the topic of Best Actor, isn't Daniel Day-Lewis about done his sabbatical away from movies. I have no idea what movie he will make, but I predict he'll get Best Actor for it.

Thought he did a poor job hosting. The opening number was fantastic but it certainly dragged on after that. His little quips and jabs were poor and ill-timed and my god, no one cares about magic. How much time did he invest in that stupid trick. You're about to announce the biggest award of the evening and we spend another handful of minutes on magic.. whoop de do.

Lada Gaga was brilliant though. Great moment.

Yeah I stopped for a minute when Lady Gaga performed, and then watched Birdman win best director/actor. I think Linklater deserved it (or Anderson), but whatever; I don't care about these shows like I used to. She raised the up the bar for the show, and I am not the biggest fan of hers.

Is there anyone they could get that can save the show from mediocrity? They've literally tried everyone, from all walks of life; they even tried out Hathaway and Franco, which obviously didn't work. I still would like Eddie Murphy to get an opportunity at it. He was supposed to a few years back, but he backed out after the whole homophobic comment.

They really need to get someone that is a comedian for a living, and not just someone incorporates comedy into their movies. What about Jerry Seinfeld, I think he'd be willing to it.

They should have Jack Black and Will Ferrell host. The best parts of the last few Oscars I've seen has involved either or both of them in someway.

Thought Jon Stewart did a great job the two times he hosted. Came out, did the opening bits with solid jokes then got out of the way.

Patrick Harris had so many jokes fall flat. One after the other.

I think John Travolta as a host would be amazing! That train wreck would be must see tv provided he kept the awkwardness flowing.
