The Raymond contract is fine... I have no problem with it.
I am also fine with Englelland. The contract will be off the books by the time it matters, and he was signed more for his positive influence so it really is hard to judge the value.
Diaz/Potter are just minimum wage depth.
The biggest positive for me is his patience. The one thing I dread when a new GM takes over is that they often want to immediately change things and put their mark on everything. I like that he came in respecting the work of his predecessors and is taking time to feel things out.
The only negative to me is Bollig.
Bollig for a 3rd was an overpayment. Not a huge set back for the team, but not great asset management either (considering both the 3rd round pick and the opportunity cost of finding someone better for that value or using the roster spot to train a prospect). I really want to like him though... seems like a good guy.

Last year was obvious. Burke could have said nothing and everyone would have known what they were trying to do - move pending free agents for picks/prospects.
This year they could potentially be buying. You can't go out and start talking about wanting to acquire a specific player without tampering. The only UFA with any value is Glencross (I suppose someone could pull an Avs and go crazy with an offer for Ramo but doubtful). There's really nothing to say.

Kessel is 6' and 200lbs.
Sedins are 6'2" and were consensus top picks.
Not sure what their draft size was but it's probably a lot more than 5'6" 137lbs.

While Burke was in Toronto, they also drafted Ryan Rupert (5'8) and Tony Cameranesi (5'9) in later rounds. I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that he wouldn't have drafted Gaudreau in round 4 just because of his size.

1yr 750K is a bad contract now? Just because Gooch didn't work out, doesnt mean that it was a bad move. If he regained 20 goal form then everyone would be praising him. It was a low risk medium reward move...

It feels like this year, his best move might be the one that he doesn' do. Make inquiries, assess the Glencross situation, but don't rush it. It makes for a boring trade deadline day, but I would be fine if nothing went down for the flames.

For all those questing if Burke would have drafted Gaudreau or not here you go.
Set to embark on his first draft with the Flames organization, Burke offered a nugget of advice to general manager Brad Treliving -- believe in the list.
“I’ve always gone by the scout’s list,” Burke said. “We take the best player available. We follow that list religiously. The only rule I have is if you try to change that list on the floor, we’re going to have a fist-fight.
“If you’ve got it right, if you do the work, you should go off your list. I’ve done it now 20-something years always off the list.
“The one time when we drafted Tyler Biggs we had two picks close by, Stuart Percy and him, and Dave Morris, our chief scout, said ‘I think we better flip these guys’. I think we took Tyler Biggs first and a couple picks later we took Stuart Percy. He said ‘I’m worried that the two picks in between, we wont get the guy’ so I let him switch it.
“I said, ‘you realize that’s a firing offense, but we’ll do it’. I think his instincts were right. Later, a team that picked between us told us they would’ve taken him…would’ve taken Tyler Biggs.”
After all, in all his experience Burke’s learned to trust his scouts and their process.
“They’re the backbone of the industry,” he said. “I think if you don’t listen to them, first off, you demoralize the group and second, then why have them if you’re not going to listen to them?

In that story ESPN had about the Olympic team selection meetings, Burke was quoted saying that he wanted to draft Jack Johnson with the 2nd overall pick in 2005, but the Ducks' scouts had Ryan ahead, so they picked Ryan.

Seems like there is a a pretty good chance that Gaudreau would have been drafted even under Burke.

I like the way AA operates with the Jays - no one ever sees his trades coming.
|
Which is another reason why I liked Sutter, he just quietly went about his business. Treliving and Burke are doing more or less the same, so I like that kind of operational policy.

I think we would have seen it with Arizona, had it not been for Ribiero and his NTC.

And I think we may have seen it with Richards and LA but the dollars were too high and the term was too long for a player who had declined too far for what would likely have turned out to be a mid to late pick.

I didn't want to start a new thread so bumping this one for GM discussion.
Treliving was praised heavily this summer and rightfully so after pulling the stunning trade for Hamilton and signing the highly sought after Frolik. He followed that up with what looked to be a great contract for Dougie and then Gio. A solid draft had many in Flames land feeling great about our management team. This is after he also got a steal for now retired Glencross getting a second and third and salvaged a 2nd for near bust Sven Baertschi
Less than 10 games in the season things appear to be going right off the rails. Trelivng has waived Raymond (a player he signed to a 3 year deal making $3.15M for this season and next) and Ramo (making $3.8M). Once TJ Brodie comes back there is likely a $3.5M (Smid) or $2.9M (Engellend) in the press box as well.
The Flames have roughly $20M in cap space next year with Russell (top 4 D), Hudler (top line RW), Jones, Hiller, Ramo, Ortio(RFA), Monahan(RFA), Gaudreau(RFA), Colborne(RFA) coming up for new deals. Flames can keep their young stars but could be tight filling holes around them.
Can he move contracts like Wideman, Stajan, Raymond, Engellend, Smid, Bollig, or even Backlund to create more flexibility?
If the Flames continue to suck he will have a few nice rentals to sell which will bring in assets and a high top pick could have this team poised to bounce back next year.
With the coaching discussion spilling over to the GM I thought we could bring this thread back to life to talk about the GM

Well if things continue, I think Brad's 80/20 success rate of GM moves drops to 66/33, and possibly farther. We are tied up in quite alot of salary, the team is underperforming, and it doesn't seem like anyone wants to bite on our blueliners - something I thought we would be able to deal from a position of strength.
I think time will still tell with this team; I want to say we should wait at least another month for them to sort out their issues, but that may be too long. Something still has to give if we want to save this season. I hope this isn't the month where we drop horribly, pick it up like crazy, and have this recent #### streak prevent us from a playoff spot in April.

I have yet to see a fatal move by Treliving that has crippled the team. Ramo was a blunder but a short term one. He inherited Smid. I'm fine with Engelland for one more year. Raymond was not a great signing but every team has a player like him on their roster. The moves he made his first season was simply to get over the cap and have a semblance of an NHL roster given the outlook was pretty bleak in regards to the perceived talent at that time as the media and fans had the team front and center in the McDavid sweepstakes. The team overachieved due to the coach installing a creative system and creating belief in the locker room. It got them to surprise the league but it's hard to overachieve in consecutive seasons and the lack of talent in the forward group has caught up to them and the goaltending that was just good enough last season has fallen off the map. This team is still a few years away from being a true annual playoff contender.
