Slight inconsistency aside, I think Glencross is a great complementary player especially given his salary.
For some reason I've always thought he was a bit of a whiner, i think he b***ed at the refs too much before he had a letter, and I understand that when he has a letter its part of his job, but some times I think to myself just shut up and play the game. Its funny sometimes when you see other players do it it comes off as passionate, but for me it has always come of as for some reason.
All of that said, I have no problem with trading Glencross for a great return, because I think we have the bodies to fill his shoes and if we can fill in other gaps in the line-up trading him I think it could be positive for this team now. But I also don't have a problem with bringing him back next season.
What I do have a problem with is giving him 4+ years and over $4m. There is no reason for the team to shoot themselves in foot down the road when they will have to pay Gio, Monahan, Gaudreau & hopefully Bennett & Poirier substantially.
From my prospective we paid $4 x 4 for Hudler, and right now we are getting allot more than we paid for. But Curtis Glencross' absolute ceiling for the remainder of his career is pretty equivalent to the Jiri Hudler we paid for.

Russell was RFA though. STL would have owned his rights with or without a contract. Also if I'm not mistaken, there was an arbitration case looming. For this reason the Flames may have asked for it to be settled before acquiring him.

Off topic here but speaking of Glencross, he was shopping at the Beacon Hills Costco tonight around 6-7pm. He didn't seem very happy to be out grocery shopping.. LOL. Had like 2 carts full of stuff.

One of the more overratted shoppers I've ever seen. Was he being lazy in the frozen food section again? The last thing we want is younger shoppers picking up on that.
Personally, if he suggests he can save more money somewhere else, you let him go at this point. Hopefully before the summer so we can get a younger shopper in return instead of losing him for nothing.

^ This! I found myself guilty of this exact same thing after the game the other night. I was sure that I saw a lazy uninterested Glencross who could have helped on the boards but stayed put, then finally got the puck and gave it away to the opposition.
I posted about it and then I was talking with my brother about it. I went as far as to bring the game up on center ice to find the play and show him what I was talking about.
As it turns out, the exact play I had in my mind wasn't nearly as
egregious as I had first thought and he played his man/men/zone pretty much perfect, all well not really moving much at all. I had created a completely incorrect impression in my mind, and formed an incorrect opinion based on 30 seconds of play.

Glencross is good and all, but please, please, please don't sign him long term. This is the time to cash in on an asset at what could be the peak of his value. Damn that NMC though.

One of the reason's Glencross haters exist is because there is actual merit behind the hatred. For instance, in some games he shows an utter lack of interest and displays a country club mentality, and in other games he shows his love for the game thru his play and compete level. We never really know which Glencross we will see each game and this is why it's frustrating to many fans.
I hope he gets re-signed for another 2-3 year x 4-5 million contract. He's an asset for this team and has proven it by wearing the A and is still a viable option as a top-6 forward.

I would be on board for that, but it's not very likely Glencross will go for a 2 year contract at this point in his career, especially coming off the kind of productive season he is currently having.

Honestly I feel as though Glenny will aim for a contract in the Dave Clarkson price range, he said it himself that hes not going to sell himself short when the day comes, and "he knows what kinds of contracts are being thrown around the NHL these days."
If we have to shell out more than 5 mill, ill take a prospect/pick whatever instead.
Did some digging and heres the article:

This. He is exactly the type of player that rebuilding teams (and we are still rebuilding) trade for a premium at the deadline.

Posted above. Your version is probably more accurate.

"I love Calgary. I love the Flames organization. My last contract proves that I love this organization," he said after skating at WinSport at Canada Olympic Park with the collection of players in town. |
Although, there is this quote that makes me think he's likely to head to free agency. Doesn't mean he wouldn't sign an extension, but as time goes by he's more and more likely to see what's out there.
Quote:
"When it comes down to it, I'm an unrestricted free-agent come July 1st and I have a no-move clause in my contract. I'd like to get something done before the season started, but in the long run, the longer we wait, unrestricted free-agency's July 1st."
|
But, it sounds like he would stay if the Flames gave him a decent extension.
Quote:
He said he and his agent, David Kaye, had talks with the team during the summer and would love to come to terms on an extension before the season, but it's gone quiet in the last few weeks.
|
This will undoubtedly be a big story to follow leading up to the trade deadline. My personal opinion is that if the Flames don't offer a good enough extension to him by then, he'd be willing to waive to go to a good team in the playoff hunt, go on a run with that team, and then test free agency and he could end up anywhere. It's also just as likely that he could get re-signed before the trade deadline. Just a hunch, but I think both Treliving and Burke like him, but don't LOVE him as a player.

I think Clarkson is a comparable player but I would hope that teams came to their senses after seeing what transpired with the Leafs and set the market lower for complementary players. Burke/Hartley/Treliving ultimately know his value to the team better than we do and we will find out in the coming months exactly how they see him fitting in the picture long term. The guy is in line for a raise but I would hope his camp is somewhat realistic given his age as it's unlikely he will be able to replicate this seasons numbers on his next deal.
