So, Oilers need a center, but pass on Roy while on Waivers, to avoid adding to many contracts, and decide to trade their 2nd highest scoring Center, (the only one aside from RNH with more points than Roy), who is 5 years younger, and an RFA at the end of the year, for the guy who was free hours earlier, and a UFA at the end of the year.
I suppose they won't need Arcobello next year anyway, since they'll have an incredibly dynamic top 3 of McDavid, RNH, Draisaitl. Sometimes you just have to look over the steaming pile of S*** in front of you, to see the beautiful pasture on the other side.
I'm happy for Arcobello and devastated for Roy. No one deserves that fate. It's bad enough he got put on waivers and on one claimed him. Even worse to now know your career will go die with the Oilers. Thoughts and prayers for him and his family during this dark time.

But as far as waivers work, am I correct in assuming that once they claimed one of Fraser / Roy that they'd have to wait for other teams to pass on the remaining player before they could claim him too?
Seems they wanted both but thought Fraser wouldn't be available if they took Roy first, but that Roy would be available regardless?
no they would have had first priority on both players if they claimed both through waivers.
NHL waiver priority is reversed league standings. you don't lose your place if you claim a player

In other news, Arcobello now believes that there exists a loving and benevolent God.
But you see, there does exist a loving and benevolent God… with a warped sense of humour. This is why his universe includes the duck-billed platypus, the Kardashians, and the Edmonton Oilers.
As Elvis Costello says, God’s comic.

In fairness to Draisaitl, he has doubled Roy's recent production:

Going back to last season, newly acquired #Oilers centre Derek Roy has two goals in his last 71 games. Two.
This is a trade that a Tanker team makes. It gives all the appearances of trying to get better while getting worse. Arcobello brings more to the table even though he's not very good. Just because Roy was a top 6 forward 4 years ago doesn't make him one now. The Oilers are worse today than they were yesterday.
I hope the NHL strips their first for intentionally tanking.

I would gladly have Roy over Mark Arcobello. Especially at that salary difference. Come on, Arcobello was awful.
I think it is an open question on which one is less-worse, but the head scratching part of this deal is with the rumours of Draisaitl going down when his WHL rights are traded. The Oilers needed to add a centre for when this happens, but they did it by subtracting a centre. All they have done is move laterally.

That blows my mind...
Kevin Westgarth...
Arguably the worst player ever to wear the Flaming C in recent memory...
And McGrattan (as a hockey player) isn't too far behind Westgarth...

Completely agreed except the 'lateral movement' is debatable.
They traded for an older, more expensive, poorer performing, UFA centre.
They kinda got worse.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
That’s true, but while he was on waivers the Oilers couldn’t know that. By the time they knew nobody else claimed him, he had already cleared.
Yeah, but if someone else had put in a claim in, the Oilers wouldn't have him available to them to play now or to trade in the future. So, it would be a pretty stupid move to think: "We think this player will help our team now, but if we put in a waiver claim, there's a slim chance we won't be able to trade him in two and half months. So, we'll wait, hope he clears waivers and then trade away one of our young centres to acquire him."
Besides, does anyone really think there will be a trade market for Roy at the deadline? At best, they might get a player like Arcobello in return.

At the rate they are going they might lose every single game in 2016-2017. I'm getting slightly concerned that someone hurts themselves. Seriously, this is a train wreck in motion. The worst franchise in North America somehow just got worse.
