A lot sportsman are "sports savants" they are so dedicated to what they are doing that they are not even really aware of the world outside. I remember that long after the Soviet Union no longer existed, Wayne Gretzky was still referring to the Russian team as "The Soviets".

If anything the MLSE blew this one by not prepping the team and secondly allowing the Raptors to rub it in as they hosted the clip for quite awhile after it was discovered.
