It's better than a lot of things actual Catholics do.

I agree that's absurd, did someone actually post that?

Our closest elementary school (1 block away) is a Catholic school and naturally, like almost all schools in Calgary, is somewhat full. We can get her into Kindergarten as non-catholics, but they won't guarantee her a Grade 1 spot.

Can I just go in say I'm Catholic when I'm not? Is there a Catholicism test I/we would have to take? (lol)

If the anti-religion peanut gallery could skip this thread it would be helpful.

lol I see your point to the OP.
In our case we asked if we could and in return we were asked why by the principal.
I stated my reasons for wanting our sons to attend their school and thankfully the principle agreed with my reasoning why it was important to us.

Thats all well and good, I just find it hilarious that people want to send their kids to school with people whom they openly hold in disdain.

I never once said I hated Catholics or held them in disdain. In fact you conveniently left out the part where I said I didn't want the anti-religious posters to give their usual opinions. If I held them in such contempt why would I want to send my child to a school full of these "disdainful" people?

Get your facts straight before getting on that moral high horse bub.

I do know that I have 3 teachers in my family and all of them have tried in the past to work at Catholic schools due to being close to their home or when they were trying to get something permanent instead of being in the sub rotation.
All were told they could if they were willing to become Catholic they would be accepted.
This is a myth and not a fact. They make exceptions if a teacher has in demand skills they need. My wife was open with them about not being catholic, and has taught at cssd for 7 years. However, she has been told they are firm about preventing non Catholics from taking leadership positions.

I'm not your 'bub' buddy.

Your thread title is: 'Faking Catholicism to get your kid into catholic school.'

You are asking advice to deceive a system to gain a perceived advantage.

I have no idea what you think of Catholics other than that they have something you want and are apparently pretty gullible.

That said, I don't believe you're in any position to criticize my 'high horse.'

Why do you want your kids to go to a Catholic school? Because it has a better reputation? Because you want them to have a religious education?

Or because it's super convenient and you can't be bothered to shuttle your kid to whatever other school is available because it isn't your 100% favourite thing...

In Grade 9 I switched to a catholic school. I believe my mom had to show a baptism certificate from one of my parents.

It would be hypocritical if the post was my kid is in catholic school now how can I get him out of religion class. But it isn't. He wants to know how to get in the school.

One thought, phone a different school and ask if you are in the process of becoming catholic then does your kid get in. Then start that process when enrolment for grade 1 is occurring. Then conveniently quit becoming catholic and they won't check again.

Well there you go, you cracked the case...

1) I don't have a problem with Catholicism or it being taught.
2) It's a publicly funded school system that I've been directing my taxes towards ever since my kid was born.
3) I want my kid to walk to school rather than sit on a bus.
4) I'm willing to say I'm a Catholic when I'm not just to get in the school for the above reasons.

You're right, that is hilarious.

I think it really depends on the school and the community. I lived in a small community with only 2 high schools - one public and one Catholic. We had non-Catholics at the Catholic school and they were quite open about being non-Catholic. I recall 2 of the girls were openly Mennonites and were exempt from participating in particular assemblies. For all I know, one of their parents may have been a Catholic and had to present a baptism certificate, but I can say for sure that neither girl was a practicing Catholic and neither participated in things like Communion or Confirmation.

I don't think there are hard and fast rules about where and when they make exceptions. In a bigger city, it might be more difficult though just because they will assume that there are more options... I don't really know though.

The school has already said that non-Catholics are welcome and would be accepted into Kindergarten, just that she may get bumped out of the school in Grade 1 if a bunch of Catholic kids show up and take her spot.

That's why I had been wondering what they used as proof. (which I now know is the baptismal certificate)
