I think that would be the correct move. Only other option would be Knight, but I assume he fits in better as a C.

Had an idea!

Problem wasn't his 'skill' or lack of. He simply wasn't fast enough to get to the spots where he can score. Not sure if he was always this slow, but he needed to get faster to play with the Flames.

Cheechoo has at least been putting up respectable numbers in the KHL the past couple of seasons. I suspect that is where we see Setoguchi next year, barring some kind of miraculous comeback.

Draft Pick
|
Too bad, I was pumped when we signed him because I remember him making a pretty big impact in San Jose during 2010 especially during playoffs. I've been cheering for the guy but 12 games, 145 minutes and no points speaks for itself. Hope he does well in Adirondack and this isn't his last chance to play in the NHL.

I may be wrong, but I think they changed it. They sort of realized it was one of those dumb rules that didn't really accomplish what was intended.

I believe in the Jays.

I wonder if the team will ask if he wants to be put on $125.00 waivers.

No reason why he would choose to sacrifice a $750,000 contract for an uncertain future.

Great news.
So Jones will play 2-3 games for us and likely get injured again while playing decent hockey.
Poirier the next call-up? Perhaps that's the final goal here.

If Treliving knew that he was going to waive Seto, he may have gave him the chance to talk to some teams in Europe about a contract. Maybe they'd see if he'd get picked up by an NHL team (other than Edmonton) for one last kick at the cat and if it doesn't work out then maybe he has a deal in place to go over seas. The Flames brass seems like they would do not only what's best for the team but what's in the players best interests too.

Was thinking he might get an offer from a team in the KHL... he might make more over there.

Hmm as much as this would be awesome, with guys coming back from injury I don't think this is in the cards quite yet. Let him tear up the AH while he gets back into game shape.

don't really understand why they didn't do it yesterday. With Hartley talking about the possibility that Jones might be available today, they obviously knew a roster had to come. Why wait for another day and force yourself to do a paper transaction with Sven/Knight? Maybe they intended to send down Sven and then he tied their hands with a good game yesterday. Honestly, I have no other explanation for them waiting until today.

True enough, but I doubt it. Other than the KHL, he wouldn't be likely to get an offer close to that. And midway through their season for a guy who's produced nothing? I'd be surprised.

They wanted more certainty on Jones' status before making the move? Pretty straight forward.

Staffan Kronwall makes 1.5M over there... if Staffan Kronwall can pull down that kind of scratch I'd think Setoguchi could find someone willing to shell out 750K+ or equivalency after tax considerations pro-rated for the rest of the year... or maybe not. If he could I'd be willing to bet the Flames would be good employers and let him.

Or maybe they weren't sure Jones could play until today?

I'd guess it's like when a player comes to the CFL after an unsuccessful NFL venture. Especially on international ice. The game is different and Setoguchi might actually be a very good fit for a team over there.
I'm just spit balling though. I'd just guess that they don't get the chance to sign many bonafide NHL players who are actually producing.

not really straight forward because they still would have had the option to keep Setoguchi up after he cleared. Worst case scenario would have been that he got claimed and Jones was still out, in which case we would have only one forward in the press box, which wouldn't have been a big deal at all.

But in the KHL if you are not producing, I think they can just cancel your contract. It might be a big risk for him at this point since he currently has a guaranteed contract. I guess it depends on how confident he is.
