Hey, you're the one that jizzes all over the place whenever I post anything. In fact, I don't think I've ever made a post on CP that wasn't followed shortly after by a UCB post.

So when's your wife getting rid of you?

If people prefer, I could also create a disposable email address so I don't know your CP handle.
Totally anonymous, no-nonsense advice. Sounds like just what CP needs.

I seriously think that this would be awesome. Maybe the thing to do is just create a Dear Sliver thread and start asking the questions. Will he be able to resist providing the much needed advice?

My kids are bugging me a lot to get a pet, though. We have a fish, but nobody in the family really likes it. Maybe fourth time's a charm with cats.

I'd say it's your pets that have been the unlucky ones. Hopefully you don't tire of your children one day.

Some psychology doctoral student could definitely write their thesis on Sliver. Maybe it's already happened too. Maybe an iron rod has gone through part of his brain?

To put it back into actual context of the article.. the cat is 18 and suffering some number of ailments. It's not merely a "the cat is annoying, you should kill it" kind of scenario. While the cat owner seems a bit eager to dispose of the cat and she comes across badly, in the grand scheme of things, the cat doesn't appear to be a great shape, and I think the columnist was working the angle of "the cat is on deaths door you should euthanize it", not the "it's okay to kill your pets when you tire of them".

So Sliver has a cat that:
Quote:
I got tired of because he was getting fat, not cute anymore and just sort of annoying
|
Which is totally 100% the fault of the owner and now he wants to offer "no nonsense" life advice? Wow that's a transition...
I'm not sure if you're bipolar, schizophrenic or slightly autistic but hell, I'm totally in for the entertaining read.

People comparing pets to humans need a reality check. The only similarity is if my wife started to randomly relieve herself around the house, I would get rid of her to. The cat is old, sick and a real pain in the arse. If the vet will not put it down time for the old pillow case/ tail pipe treatment. The humane society does not need anymore old unwated cats.

Plenty of people think pets or animals in general are disposable once their interest wanes or they become an inconvenience. People with that attitude rank extremely high on my POS scale. I don't think we should be shocked by Sliver's attitude, how else are animal shelters packed to the rafters all the time. Easy come easy go.

You are, it seems, missing all the points.
The vet won't put the cat down. Which means that someone with the experience to actually know these things has determined that the cat can still have enough of a good and rewarding life with a bit of more work on the part of the owner. The owner doesn't want that, which is a shame. The owner has several options she can pick from.
What most folks are objecting to is Sliver disposing (in one way or another) of his cats after a year or two because he got tired of one, didn't want to deal with another, and was overfeeding his third, making it "not cute" anymore. None of those are reasons to get rid of a pet.
However, as burn_this_city pointed out, most folks see pets as disposable, which is really a shame, and imo...speaks volumes about them as people.

So yeah, don't worry all, I'm not getting a cat.
|
I too am a little sad for your kids, but I suspect for an entirely different reason...
I hope they don't get fat, less cute, and a little annoying - which unfortunately means they won't become teenagers because I speak from experience when I say kids are cuter and far less annoying before teen years (fat is entirely dependent on their care and upbringing... oh wait...).
Well, if you can get a hibachi for a cat you can probably get a fire pit for a kid, maybe even a Vitamix blender...
