I wonder what it was that made him think that was possible.

San Jose isn't playing very well. They're getting beat by not so great teams. Whether they turn on the jets early enough to vault themselves is to be seen. Minnesota isn't producing offensively like they were. The Avs have taken a clear step back. Tell me how that doesn't leave room for the Flames to squeak in? They're 5 games above .500. They'll need to be 10-12 games above by season's end to make the dance. So they're half way there in terms of W/L differential. Both goaltenders have proven capable of winning and stealing games. We're winning WITH a handful of regulars out, who will be well rested and back before these kids run out of steam.

Just because we're operating under the title of "rebuild" it's still just a title slapped on the team. It doesn't take playoffs out of the realm of possibility. If we extend this winning streak we're on now enough games, then we won't even have to play stellar later because we'll have built up a statistical cushion.

I'm on board with Ward.
People thought it ridiculous/unlikely because he says it before the season started

This one made me laugh. Flames=Best offensive team in the West and 5th in the league. To be fair, I can't blame Locke for thinking that at the time.

If the Flames do make the playoffs this season, Ward shouldn't have to buy a beer in this town next spring!

He was close! It was Feaster that messed it up and gave him a choice :-) Where is Ward these days anyways? Did he get fired for this prediction?

Even if the flames don't make the playoffs, the odds of them winning the lottery would be so bad that the hockey gods themselves would have to intervene... As a reward for not laying down like the pathetic franchise to the north.

The team that won the NBA draft lottery last year did so with a 1% chance. Bumped down two teams that were shamelessly tanking in a way the Oilers could only envy.

Maybe - who knows, but the dream of the guys in the Flaming C hoisting the Stanley Cup again lives on!

The plan is definitely getting harder to execute. Right now we seem to be on Plan E or thereabouts:

1. Trade a bag of magic beans to a Western Conference bubble team at the deadline, for their first-round pick.

2. Make the playoffs, causing the bubble team to miss.

3. Bubble team wins lottery.

4. Profit!

I think that the "floss" is included in that bet.

He's still on the TSN hockey panel with Duthie & the boys. Sadly with TSN losing out on national hockey rights, we don't see them on pregame/intermission shows anymore (unless you're a Jets/Habs fan).

In all fariness to Aaron Ward, the guy had inside ties to the Boston organization. When Boston's GM thought that the deal was about to be finalized, I think we can give Ward the pass on jumping the gun. Was a very uncommon situation as the Flames decided to make the classier move instead of taking the better deal.

I wasn't as ambitious as Ward saying the Flames would make the playoffs, but you could tell quite early that many prospects were knocking at the door. Of course they'd have better results than last year. A year with ~50 one goal games, many of which didn't quite go their way.

However, If Gio or Brodie go down then Ward is going to look like an idiot. Flames currently have 0 defensive depth and it shows everytime Diaz takes the ice. Not sure how many AHL guys could step up beyond Wotherspoon.

As good as we've been playing, it's hard to look at the wild card standings and not think we're still in tough. Basically we have to keep winning at the same pace (no duh, I know) ... It's nice to have these points in the bank, certainly.

Assuming the following teams are locks based on the standings thus far:

Anaheim
St. Louis
Vancouver
Nashville

We're going to have to beat out three of:

Chicago
Minnesota
Los Angeles
San Jose
Winnipeg

Maybe Nashville or Vancouver aren't for real. Winnipeg probably isn't. Let's hope Niemi continues to be hot garbage, and Chicago or LA continue to struggle. Minnesota is coming on pretty good.

I guess what I'm saying is, we're going to have to be REALLY good to win our way in. More likely is that a few of these teams continue to not be very good.

Props to Ward he had more faith in the Flames then most of us did prior to game 1.
Most of Sportsnet analysis have been positive about the Flames since they have been rolling.
Many of the TSN analysis not so much. Still hoping the other shoe will fall soon on our team.
I think TSN still has the Flames ranked 24th for "their" power rankings. Only 2 above the lowly Greasers.
