Backlund did play 76 games last year.
Hopefully he can recover from this by the start of the season (still has 2 weeks) and play close to 82 this year.

It's a blessing is disguise. He's not a true #1 or #2 center, we need to start giving other players a chance to take that spot.

Sad news about Mikael. Just when he seemed poised to break out. I guess every team has their guy made of glass and sadly Backlund is ours.

I think last season he was trending towards a good #2. Definitely a solid stop gap until Monahan and Bennett are ready to step up, which will be 2-3 years away.

They will but only when they play better than him.

...and this will give them the chance to show that they can play better than him. I think that's what he was getting at.

See this is why it was okay to pick up "veteran" guys like Setogutchi and Raymond. It really doesn't take away that many spots from the kids. Season hasn't even started and we already have injuries. The rooks will get their chances.

I'm hoping Granlund, Reinhart, Knight, Bennett or Arnold (in that order) step up and see that glimmer of hope of making this team just got a bit brighter.
Sucks badly for Backlund though. That kid is pretty valuable to this team defensively, and to a lesser extent offensively.

What a stupid statement

Who is going to take those minutes from him to play #1 or #2? (Of which Backlund is a good #2C)

It's worse! It's better! It's terminal! It's a cybernetic implant and we now have a cyborg center!

If he's not a true #1 or a true #2 he was one of the best #3s in the league last year.

A #3 playing top 6 minutes?

Backlund had fantastic numbers for a third line C but he was not playing that role for the flames. I think when it all shakes out though he will make a great number 3 behind Bennett and Monahan
