But his Olympic play is part of the problem. There was concern about guys like Toews and Doughty - in their early 20s - not having enough juice in the tank for the playoffs after playing big minutes in the Olympics. I'm betting they had their ice time dialed back in the last third of the season to keep them fresh. That's what Boudreau was trying to do - keep those 43-year-old legs fresh so Selanne could be effective.

Selanne will be able to put his coaching expertise to the test if and when he ever becomes one.

At least Selanne waited until he retired to make public statements, he towed the NHL party line exceptionally well during his career, I don't see how him venting out some frustration about how his final season played out affects anything.
It could be argued that the man's swan song was doused a little by Bourdreau who limited Selannes playing time. It's not like he was going to be a liability out there on the PP.

Oh well, enjoy retirement Teemu.

I seem to recall another player ripping Boudreau as well. Anyone remember who it was?

Default Selanne rips Boudreau

“@cotsonika: Getzlaf said he was disappointed to hear Selanne say he should have gone to bat for him. He did at times, had to take step back at others.”

“@cotsonika: Getzlaf wasn't surprised at what Selanne said. He was surprised at how he said it and that it was in a book.”

Then the coach should explain that to him. Didn't sound like the communication was the best, a coach should tell his players why he's doing what he's doing.

I guess the Flames never had the chance to sign him with Hartley at the helm.

Comments from Hiller:

Randy Sportak@SUNRandySportak · 4m
#Flames Jonas Hiller isn't surprised about Selanne comment’s regarding Boudreau. "I don't think the was too happy there all the time."

Randy Sportak@SUNRandySportak · 3m
Hiller: "he was hoping to get some more ice time, especially on the powerplay. I think Bruce didn't really give him that time."

Randy Sportak@SUNRandySportak · 2m
Hiller: “(Selanne) told me at the end you can just be as good as your coach wants you to be.” Hiller felt similar, pushed from the No.-1 job

Randy Sportak@SUNRandySportak · 2m
Hiller on Boudreau: "I didn't feel I got his support there 100% at the end of the year."

Randy Sportak@SUNRandySportak · 1m
More Hiller: "if the coach isn't rooting for you or doesn't have your back it's tough to play at your best."

What's Hiller going to say if Hartley thinks Ramo is playing better and gets the majority of starts?

I don't see it that way. It sounds like this was Boudreau's operating policy. If he lost faith in what you can bring you'll never get the opportunity to prove him wrong. Seems like a crappy way to treat your veterans, especially when they've helped you so much in the past. I wouldn't want Boudreau coaching the Flames.

Sounds like a coach who wouldn't let an aging star or struggling goalie dictate decisions....

Selanne sounds like an entitled brat. Great player, but this doesn't reflect well on him.

As long as he supports him as his coach and still believes in him, even as the back-up, I'm sure Hiller will be fine. Seems like his issue was the coach not trusting him in net, and not having his back, hard to play well when you don't have the confidence of your coach. There's a difference between challenging someone to be better and not believing in him.

Doesn't make sense that the coach wouldn't let him play. Selanne was a sniper until the very end, probably could have still produced at ppg pace in the right circumstance. So many times he'd score the clutch goal with few minutes to go. He might seem entitled in the quotes but his words probably have some credence to them.

Hiller said BB wasn't even talking to him.

Of everything said of the guy today, this sticks out to me the most. It sounds like almost childish behavior.

It could be a case of players whining, but sometimes where there's smoke there's actually fire.

Selanne got 2 and half minutes of ice time on the PP a game, roughly the same as Iginla.

Nick Cotsonika ‏@cotsonika
Selanne via the Ducks: "In frustration, I made several comments following our Game 7 loss to the Kings that I shouldn’t have said."

Nick Cotsonika ‏@cotsonika
Selanne (cont.): "As I’ve said many times, Bruce is a nice guy, but we simply had a different view on my role with the Ducks."

Nick Cotsonika ‏@cotsonika
Selanne (cont.): "I’m sorry if I hurt Bruce or anyone else, that was not my intent.

The timing in this is everything. Dude's career was literally over and ending not the way he wanted - it was the worst possible time for him to talk to a writer about his feelings.

I think Bodreau is a bit of a goof to be sure, but Selanne is off-side here. But I get it given when the comments were made. Hopefully they both move on.

The guy is one of the all time greats. I think he is entitled to a little more playing time/ whining. The guy is competitive, like someone else said its that drive that has made him have so much longevity in his career. He truly believed he had more production in him than the coach allowed him to display and I believe him. I wonder if the Ducks had a different coach if he would still be playing.
