So went in today and filled out all the wonderful tax stuff and pee in a cup.

The best part was when I walked in the front desk girl goes
FD: you're my new boss
me: no, I'm your teammate
FD girl had a huge smile on her face.

Good for you! A job is required to live usually, but it should always add to your life, not subtract.
That $26K in Alabama is probably closer to $40K up here because of taxes, exchange, etc.

Probably more due to difference in cost of living.

Most people in Calgary probably couldnt afford to live alone in an apartment and have a car making $40K a year.

Oy vay.

Don't want to get off topic too much but that attitude is exactly why some people think Calgarians are snobs.

If you qualified that by saying, 100k is no good to satisfy my lifestyle then that's different.

But there's a LOT of people (non-CPers of course) who survive and raise a family on less than 100k a year.

They might not have a golf membership, or eat at restaurants and go out 3x a week, or Flames season tickets and a luxury car lease. But they survive, and have a mortgage to boot.

On a personal note, started a business several years ago and of course lived off next to nothing at the beginning. So it is possible, and it is possible to limit monthly expenses to $2,000 or less but of course that would require extreme sacrifices and certainly no luxury items or expenses.

But to say that 100k is not enough to survive in Calgary is just plain wrong and a slap in the face to those who do so, on a regular basis.

If $100k isn't enough to survive, you're doing it wrong.

No kidding! I said $40K wasnt great, I made that for a while and couldnt make ends meet without a roommate.

That isnt hell.

$100k? For one person? I dont shave my balls with gold-flecked shaving cream.

Now that is just crazy talk.

I think one of the biggest problems here is people try to keep up with the Jones and make themselves house poor. But that is a personal choice that one could choose to make or not.

Having a decent place to live is keeping up with the Jones' now?

Most people can have a very decent place to live without overextending themselves. Ie you can choose to live in Westhillhurst VS. say Copperfield or the like. But at the end of the day that is a personal choice.

Ill move on, I've taken this off topic.

"A decent place to live" is a highly subjective term. For many people in Calgary, that means 2000sq and granite countertops.

It sure doesn't mean what it meant even 25 years ago.

I agree. Plenty of people don't make $100k annually here and they're doing fine.

I'd say if someone can't live off $100k/year in Calgary then the income isn't the problem - it's how the money is managed.
