Monahan was sheltered for quite a bit of the season. The Oilers just expect their 1st rounders to make an impact right away.

Why are people downplaying Monahan's rookie season? When was the last time we had an 18 year old post more than 20 goals in his rookie campaign? Comparing him to MacKinnon's rookie season is unfair, aside from the injury, Monahan also didn't have half the supporting cast that MacKinnon did. Who knows if Monahan could have kept his torrid pace if not for the injury?

It's a small point, but Monahan played virtually the entire 2013–14 NHL season as a 19-year-old.

Monahan had a successful season. No qualifier needed. But if they wanted one, and for the reasons Textcritic outlined, I would have suggested "very" or "remarkably" precede the appropriate use of the word 'successful'.

I think we need a poll.

This is pretty much why MacKinnon had a great rookie season. He is going to have a beast year in 14/15, but much of the reason why the Avs are good is because of the the talent MacK has around him.

Of course he was. He was a rookie.

While having some skilled guys around him certainly helped, let's not kid ourselves about MacKinnon; the guy is elite. He broke Gretzky's record of consecutive games with points by an 18 year old. He's the youngest player to ever win the Calder. By the end of next season he will probably be the best player on the Avalanche, and (IMHO) one of the top 10 forwards in the NHL. He would have excelled on any team* last season.
* Except the Oilers, of course.

The Avs that MacKinnon joined were basically the same team that finished 2nd last in the league. The talentless Flames team that Monahan joined finished better than them.
The Avs added Tanguay (for 16 games) replacing David Jones and McGinn for Kobasew.... other than that they were the same team.
MacKinnon made the rest of the team better..... much better. He was arguably the best player for the Avs in the playoffs.

Yeah, as impressed as I've been with how Monahan, Poirier, and Klimchuk are progressing (still early obviously) I would still probably take the trade Feaster offered to get MacKinnon.

Yeah MacKinnon was definitely a big offensive addition for Colorado, and deserves more credit than FFF has extended. However, the 2013 team was not "basically the same" as the 2013–14 team; there is more to it than that. Stastny had an off year, O'Reilly played in less than 30 games, and Landeskog was an emerging young forward; NOT the same player who broke through last season. Also, don't undervalue the huge upgrade that Patrick Roy presented behind the bench in place of probably one of the worst NHL coaches ever, Joe Sacco.
I don't think there is any question that MacKinnon had much more to work with in his rookie season than did Monahan.

And if I recall, he didn't rack up points at the beginning of the season but once he got comfortable, he really separated himself.
MacKinnon may have benefited from playing with more talented line mates, but he totally deserved to be where he was in that regard.
Monahan did very well for a 19 year old rookie, but he needed more sheltered minutes, as do most rookies.

Well, to be fair to the Oilers, and remembering that the Oilers are no good, players like Hall and Noogie were immediately among their best players - how could they protect them?

MacKinnon also played on the wing which has less defensive responsibilities than centre.
