I really hope the Oilers truly believe Justin Schultz is going to be an elite defenceman.

He is indeed that which has been shat, player-wise.

The contract they gave Schultz belies MacTavish's spoken words. Unfortunately. I was really hoping he'd get the 6x6 deal.

Maybe he just refuses to see anyone who disagrees with him.

That is exactly the case. If they truly thought he was a top dman they would have thrown a multi year contract at him. Only one year tells me they want him to prove it because they have doubts.

Where did the "4 or 5 Giordanos" thing come from? I've seen it posted a handful of times but I don't know what the original source was.

Just one of the gems from an Oiler poster who claimed the oilers had 4 or 5 Giordano type dmen on their roster. It just a statement that kind of stuck out just like Hemsky's talented pinky or Robbie Schremp was going to amass 1300 points in his NHL career. Or now Schultz being a Norris caliber dman. Only the sad thing about the last statement is that it is from management and not an online poster.

have we seen any on ice brilliance offensively or any chance that he is getting better defensively?

I can't imagine he is getting worse since entering the league. It will be interesting to see his progress this year now that he has a larger contract and likely an even bigger one next season if he has a season like his last one.

I don't remember ever hearing how amazing he is except from Oilers fans that I know. It was a big deal when they signed him but is he really one of the top defensive prospects in the league?

I do see him getting a little better defensively. A lot of kids his age do. But often, that comes with a bit of a offensive output reduction too. I say often, it doesn't have to. But it's a good bet. Which is exactly why he'll never be a Norris contender. For both sides of the coin to get to the level they need to be at for that, it's highly unlikely. Not impossible, but of course, it's not going to help it's the Oilers developing his skills and habits, haha.

And no, he's not one of the top defensive prospects in the league. I'll agree he's a guy you'd want on your team, especially at his age. But top prospect? Uhhh, no.

He maxes out at a 3rd spot guy on a good team, with some definite PP upside. First pairing guy on a bottom feeder, but not on a contender, and not in the running for any awards.

Did the 75 or so defensemen that are significantly better than Schultz all defect to the KHL without notifying anyone?

Did the Oilers management and fans hype Marc-Andre Bergeron this much that one year when he scored 15 goals?

Can't remember.

Only 75? On a good team, Schultz should play on the bottom pairing with significant powerplay time. Similar to how they use Krug in Boston.

I was trying to be polite.

Schultz is a better offensive version of MAB. If he ever figures out how to play defense, he might be useful for Edmonton.

Imma have to go ahead and disagree with you there.

If he ever figures out how to play defense he may not be detrimental to Edmonton.

Thats about as good as its going to get.

Schultz is a bigger, more mobile version of Marc Andre Bergeron without the shot from the point. Norris potential is laughable.
