Well, I've lived in more Canadian cities than most, Edmonton traffic is/was far from brutal compared to every city I've lived in. Keep rolling your eyes though, adds a lot to the discussion.

They don't take care of their roads in winter though, that's for sure.

I thought when we did a comparison of festivals from Edmonton and Calgary, in a different thread, Calgary actually had more.

Edmonton may call itself Canada's festival city, but the rest of Canada doesn't. But you can call yourself whatever you want. They called themselves City of Champions for the longest time.

Don't get me wrong, there are great things to do there and the summers are nice. Sometimes the slagging on Edmonton does get a little stale (except for the Edmonton is no good thread, that's gold!). But even they have recently admitted they have a bit of an image problem in Canada.

I'm going to bet there are next to no people who live in Montreal or Toronto that say to themselves, 'hey I gotta check out Edmonton for all the festivals!'

I live in St.Albert and quite like it. It's worth the extra 1000 a year in property taxes to be able to say I don't live in Edmonton. Getting to 118th/142 could be anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes most days depending on time and where you are in St.Albert. St.Albert is a great family community. If thats not you, than it could be boring.

I wasn't talking rush hour, obviously that's a whole other world (yet nothing compared to Calgary). As long as it's not between 7-9am or 4-6pm and it's taking you more than 20mins, something's wrong.

I went to GMac for 2yrs (which is right downtown) before transferring to UofA, I did that drive every day. Except for the semester where my last class finished at 4pm, I was always usually home in about 20.

That city gets hit so hard every winter that, at least the years I was there, it felt like every major road was simultaneously under construction from Jun-Aug. Probably the only place where it's actually quicker getting around in winter than summer..

I live on the edge of downtown and have meetings in St. Albert frequently Traffic lasts longer than 7 to 9 or 4 to 6. Add in the fact that downtown Edmonton has the arena construction, lrt construction, museum construction, (not to mention condos) and access in and out is difficult and time consuming. GMC is on the north edge of downtown, but try coming from south or east of GMC and getting out with current construction projects. You're looking at 10+ minutes right there if you're coming during rushhour or lunch.

Unless you are going off traffic, 20 minutes is a big stretch in my experience. I think you're looking at 35 to 45 (or a fair bit more depending upon where you live in St. Albert) if you have to travel during rush hour to get to the core.

I moved to Edmonton for school about 10 years ago... and 10 years later I'm still here so it can't be that bad. I like Calgary and all, but I just prefer the small town feel to Edmonton... and all that pretentiousness of Calgarians.

I really like the SW side of Edmonton, and the river valley is awesome. I think you'll enjoy yourself, the people are nice and friendly.

Wow, I have a completely different experience. Maybe it matters where in downtown. I have a lot of early meetings beside the courthouse and I can get there in 25 minutes. Getting home at the end of the day is longer, but still not terrible.

I agree. The fastest month for traffic is April I think, because construction hasn't started and the snow is usually gone.

I think the transportation dept does a poor job of amending traffic light synchronization on major roads or key roads around construction projects.

Interesting to hear about all the construction going on downtown lately. I've only been gone a year, but hearing stuff like that makes me feel like it's been much longer.

As annoying as that has to be for traffic, I'm glad to hear its getting revitalized. Having the arena downtown should help that grow. For a city of a million people, downtown Edmonton is pretty sad. Was basically a ghost town after 6pm when I was there, and you get bombarded by pan-handlers in the evening. Calgary's more or less the same population, and its downtown core feels like Toronto in comparison. Can't believe how much this city's grown in the 9 years I was gone.

I live in St Albert and I can definitely say that my children have it better here than when we lived in Calgary. You can tell by this thread that there is a reason why some say that St Albert is where Calgarians live when they have to work in Edmonton.

In my opinion, avoid crossing the North Saskatchewan river if you can at all avoid it.

If you do consider St Albert, remember to check the property taxes on the property because without alot of industry, taxes can be crazy.

My travel time to downtown is 30 to 35 minutes non rush, and can move to 40 to 45 minutes rush hour. That has more to do with the part of St Albert I live in though because some parts it probably knocks 10 to 15 minutes off. To compare, I can be at Leduc international in 35 to 40 minutes; the Henday has really helped that way.

I think alot will depend upon your situation with children, schools, how much you want to spend, and the age of the property you want to buy.

If it wasn't for the property taxes, and of course your personal situation, I would highly recommend St Albert, especially working at 118 ave and 142 street.
