Purcell isn't anything special, but I think Edmonton wins this trade.
Sam Gagner is just terrible. One of the worst players in his own end in the league.

yes. Lecavalier last year and now Malone.

Yeah, I remember that one. 7 points is still a pretty good haul. But the NHL is full of statistical deficiencies.
Just like that phantom goal off the netting above the glass, the back of the tender, and in, last season.

So now that Gagner, Paajarvi, and Dubnyk are gone does this officially end rebuild 2.0?

Maybe it's the anti-Oiler bias, but I'd much rather have Purcell.

It's really hard to judge how good any of these young Oilers prospects are because the Oilers are such a mess as the kids are rushed and often coached poorly. Gagner may have a bit of an easier go of it in the Eastern Confernce where there will be more room for him and he may be properly used and coached. That said I watch a lot of Oilers games and he's usually been their softest forward and really needs a lot of work on his defensive game. Funny to say given how long he's already been around but he's kind of a project.
Purcell will probably get some quality ice time in Edmonton as slick really doesn't like Yakupov and he will now be able to put Purcell on the 2nd line and bump down Yakupov to the 3rd line. He's going to find that his soft ways won't translate well to the Western Conference. Could be okay for them or could be another passenger on the loser train.

They're rebuilding the rebuild from the previous rebuild.

This is actually a good trade for the Oilers. They desparately need to get bigger. Smart move.

They got taller sure, but Gagner outweighs Purcell...

Sounds like the Oilers pro scouts really did their homework as Purcell will fit in perfectly.

They are likely going to buyout Gagner but realized it was a D-move to post it on twitter right after the trade

Unless I'm interpreting the rules incorrectly, I don't think they can buy him out. The buy-out period ends tomorrow at 5:00pm ET, but in order to be bought out, he has to clear waivers. In order to clear waivers before 5:00pm tomorrow, he would have needed to be put on waivers today.
They could have a second buyout window, but that's only if someone files for arbitration, which they won't know until July 5.

That shouldn't even be an issue, because the playoffs are nowhere in sight for the Oilers.

He won't hit or play defence. So yeah, he will fit in quite well with the Oilers

That buyout rumor was just ridiculous.
Why would Tampa trade for a higher paid player to buy him out?
Think people.

Purcell was exceptional a couple years ago in the playoffs netting 17 points in 18 games, but he's been pretty much invisible the last 2 years. Perhaps a change of scenery will do him good, but he's definitely soft. How does a guy who's 6'3" and 203 lbs. only average 13 PIMs over an 82 game season for his career? Heck, even Butlersoft has double that many PIMs.

I actually like Gagner and he could have been a good player in the NHL. Unfortunately the Oilers did not use him properly and his progress regressed. I am pretty sure we will see a better Sam Gagner now that he will be playing in Tampa.
As Teddy Purcell. He only had one good season as far as I know. Last season he's been terrible. The way Tampa fans talked about him, it looks like he will fit in with the Oilers perfectly. The team is full of individual who doesn't even know the meaning of the word "TEAM".
