As for Backs and Stajan, you have to wonder if one of them will be moved sooner than later. I hope its not Backs as he's starting to show some serious growth as an NHL'er. But Stajan just signed a new 4 year deal...
But, be it Draisaitl, Bennett or Reinhart, diplaces one of them. I hope its Stajan and I hope we can move him while he has some value as a solid FO guy and shutdown 2-way C.
|
I don't think Reinhart, Bennett or Draisaitl would be on the Flames next season. In my mind no rush to move Backlund or Stajan. Might as well see if Backlund continues to improve, and Stajan's not hurting us in his current (last season) role. Move them when you need to.

Total conspiracy hat here, but this may be a bit Burke/Treviling trolling the Oilers. Everyone is predicting that they'll pick Leon and that they need Leon. Maybe these are just rumours to the oilers worried about not getting Leon. It's not like Burke has admitted to trying to deceive other GMs the past or anything...

But people here are simply assuming it's Sven. Maybe it's not. Maybe Buffalo is looking for a more experienced player to insert into their lineup?
Would the trade be better if it was Hudler? Or someone along those lines?

I'm a fan of this (acquiring Draisaitl) if this is the case. Preferably Sven wouldn't be part of the cost.

I think after signing that 4 year extension the obvious trade bate will be Backlund because he should get a solid return as opposed to Stajan who would get you a 3rd or maybe a 2nd. Stajan is more valuable to us as a player and for what he gives to the community than what he would return in a trade. Backlund had a great second half but his upside is still a very good 3rd line two way centre imo.

My only worry is that the rumour about the Oilers coveting Draisaitl is a smokescreen. They would be idiotic to make their draft intentions so widely known... But they are the Oilers, so...

Yup. Reinhart has to be the target. I just don't see it any other way.

The inside information is that the Flames want to move up (surprise surprise).
I really doubt Leon is high on the Flames list. How can Burke go from stating he doesn't like a player to then wanting to move up to draft him.

He also said it was the teams duty to lie to the fans heading into the draft so who knows.

The source is always taken into consideration. Boomer obviously knows people in the org, but he too often takes the path of a "get people talking, hold an outlier opinion" to be taken as a serious source of insider information in my opinion.

Didn't he break Trelliving coming to Calgary?
I have doubts that Boomer has a lot of specific insight to what the Flames are thinking about individual players but I do think he knows enough Flames people and is around enough that he would know who is/isn't coming in for interviews, when the team is more busy around the dome/offices and when trade talks are in the works.

When he does that he is usually pretty clear about it being his opinion and not any sort of inside information.

Only if they're both available when Edmonton picks, which isn't likely.
As mentioned, it depends on what happens with #1. Looks like most of the trading partners are going after a centre and likely Buffalo as well, so if that's the case yes either could drop, but either could be taken above us, and one of them will be by Edmonton. And if either one is gone before 3, we won't get either of them. And with no consensus at all, both could go 1-2.
So, if they're really interested in those guys in particular, it makes sense to try and get to #2.
What would be really great is getting to #2 without giving up #4, but that's unlikely.

IMO I think he's progressed beyond that being his "upside". I think that's what he is right now (on a good team to say nothing of the Flames). His upside is higher.
